Reliving childhood memories.... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Back in 1977, my parents bought me a bike that I had picked out from Sears, never had seen anything like it. It was $106.00 back then as I remember, it was just something I HAD to have, and one of the most expensive presents I had ever got growing up. I basically drove the wheels off the thing and finally traded it for some CB stuff in 1988. I loved that bike though....I rode the damn thing for 10 years until I finally decided to buy a 10 speed.

So I decided recently that I really wanted to try to find another bike like it.....here's a pic of what it looked like brand new :)

So, I found this sorry thing in Texas on a site online for $180.00....and I had to get it! The forks and sprocket are out in San Antonio getting rechromed, and the frame will get redone by one of the guys in the body shop. With choppers coming back into style, maybe I'll let my 4 year old have it for his first 20" bike in a couple years.

So what does everyone here wish they had from when they were growing up?

You need the sissy bar to make it complete!

And don't forget the baseball card in the spokes!!:D

I had one that I got at a Western Auto store that had wheelie wheels built into the frame. I could pop it back on those wheels and ride forever! I learned how to turn and go around corners while up on the back wheel. I've been searching for one of those bikes. Also the back tires back then were "slicks" instead of the treaded tires that have today.

We would have contests to see who could leave the longest skid mark on the sidewalk.
ByeByeChrysler
we would also double-ride on those BANANA seats

What abot the 5 speed stick shifter located on the frame. I remember having a Purple Stingray with a banana seat, of course it had glitter paint. :4:

Got the forks and the crank back from the chrome shop.....they're okay, but will have to get the forks redone at some point, they're just not up to my standards :(

The frame will get done in a couple weeks, then time for tires :)

Starting to look much better....got to get a better pic and wipe those fingerprints off the forks ;)

Nice, when are you gonna put in the baseball or playing card.

Too cool. I had a similar bike with a small front tire, drum brake, 5-speed, etc. The thing cost about $60 in '71 and wasn't very well made. I think that it was from Grand Auto (CA). What I really wanted, a Schwinn Krate Stingray, I never did get. I still want one. Just can't afford a Krate and the MDX.

A guy a few streets away has THAT EXACT BIKE for sale, except it has what he called Ram's Horn handlebars. Price on it was $250.00, and it was stone mint. If you're interested I'll pursue it for you.

HEY! My best friend had that bike when we were 8 or 9. His was blue. I remember the placement of the shifter well because the first time I rode his bike I tried braking by pushing down on the pedals instead of using the handlebar brake. I ran into a wall and pulled a "nutter" on that shifter.

Good times, good times.

I ended up finishing this bike years ago, and it hung on my basement wall, and I wondered why in the heck I needed to bother with it.........it ended up moving out to the garage, suspended from the rafters and forgotten.

Well, my oldest son turned 7, and when came time to get him a new bike for his birthday, there was only one that he wanted. Yep, you guessed it :)

As these bikes are really back in style, he's the hit of the neighborhood, and watching him cruise down the street, it's really me, and it's the summer of '78 all over again. I wonder if David Turton's home........

Wow, three years in the making. At least 2 boys are happy.

Speaking of kids and bikes, today's kids are all armored up in their helmets, elbow and knee pads. Not that I'm saying safety isn't an issue. But I remember riding bikes with no pedals, no helmet, half the frame about to dissolve in rust.
hondacuraworld
The answer is simple, we've replaced respect for things and learned skill with safety features (again not saying that safety's not a plus, however some parents overdo it), just like everyone getting a prize in a contest because parents don't want to deal with teaching kids there are winners and losers, and that winning comes with hard work and dedication.

Back to the bike though, I rode that thing up through the summer of 1988, when I traded it for some CB gear. Just as well, it had pretty much seen its day after ten years of being mostly my only means of transport.

Wow. That gives me chills. It's like Daniel Stern was narrating The Wonder Years just now.
