Should Barry's Home Runs Count? - Click HERE for Original Thread

In light of the allegations that Bonds, Giambi, Sheffield and others were given steroids, how do you feel about Bond's 73 home run record and eventual attainment of 756. Should there be an asterisk? Should he simply retire?

To me, although he's stronger, he still has to hit the ball. I've never heard how HGH or steroids increases bat speed and/or reaction time.

* and retire

I was a Barry Bonds fan (I am orginally from Pittsburgh) and I didn't even hold it against him when he left the Pirates.

I was starting a thread yesterday about steroids in baseball but got a call and by the time I came back the moment had passed for me. It just shows how great minds think alike, LL. Now as I say that your question is fundamentally flawed. Why should only Bonds records be tainted?
Seriously LL, They all took the same drugs from the same lab(allegedly). The only way that this issue will be resolved is if the players union takes it upon themselves to institute mandatory steroid testing with no tolerance. That I don't see happening. This scandal will make the whole Pete Rose saga seem like a walk in the park.

I seriously doubt that Hank Arron or Babe Ruth took steroids.

I suppose now some will argue to let Pete Rose into the Hall with an *??

A tough crowd would say that he should be banned from baseball and the records he set should be eliminated from the record books.

Well said BaldEagle. Bonds and all the rest that used drugs. Baseball MUST clean up their act. The stuff they're using is really bad s**t.

*, as for Pete, "forget about it"

Understood. I just hope this doesn't get out of hand. Looks like Canseco had a point after all. Does that mean retroactive testing? What about Mark McGuire, or Sammy Sosa? Pandora's box may be opening....

I think his HR records should count the same as the accomplishments/awards of Olympic Medalists' who were found to be using steroids. :4:

I think they should test anyone who has attained or is approaching a record. If you didn't do it on your own then forget about it.

Sprinters can't even gain a record of the wind is blowing too strong!

I'd agree with you but only Bonds has any effect on the records. I don't think Sheffield, Santiago or Giambi are close to any records.

I think Ruth was actuallly hospitalized once for eating too many hot dogs.

Denies Steroid Use

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, angered by a persistent reporter’s questions about alleged steroid use, picked up a 1997 Nissan Sentra and hurled it at him, eyewitnesses confirmed today.

The terrified reporter, who had approached Mr. Bonds in the clubhouse parking lot of the Giants’ spring training facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, barely escaped the flying Sentra, which was totaled upon impact with the ground.

The car-throwing episode came on the heels of a troubling incident involving Mr. Bonds the day before, in which the angry outfielder, dogged by questions about steroids, uprooted a mighty oak tree with his bare hands and snapped it in two over his knee.

Fearing more destruction in the wake of the Sentra incident, the Arizona National Guard were summoned to subdue the volatile all-star, but Mr. Bonds responded by bending the 120-millimeter gun turret atop one of the Guard’s armored vehicles until it resembled a pretzel.

While Mr. Bond’s most recent feats of superhuman strength seem likely to lend credence to the nagging rumors of steroid use, David Gest, the estranged husband of Liza Minnelli, warned against a rush to judgment.

“It may not be steroids at all,” Mr. Gest said. “It might just be vodka.”

Follow the rules and guidelines that were in place during the use. If no rules were in place the he gets a pass if the rules said they wouldn't count then they shouldn't count.

I think the *&^%%$# media has once again blown this issue way outta proportion. Barry Bonds is a sure fire, 1st ballot, unanimous HOFer - period. Early in his career he had the rare blend of speed and power - He was the 1st player in history to do 30-50 (HRs-SBs) and is the only player to do 400-400. As he got older, the speed slowly faded, so he bulked up and is hitting for MORE (he always had power) power. In this country, you are innocent until proven guilty, and if Mr. Bonds denies steriods use, I will take him at his word, especially since he has a history of speaking his mind and is not known to be a chronic liar or cheater (no cork in his bats). The media never like Bonds since he never liked the media and would not give them the gratuitous sound bites that other wanna-be superstars did. To me this is just a vendetta by the media, the same media that would rather glorify a 'Mark McGwire-All American' feel good story over a Sosa or Bonds. The same goes for the original dirtbags that put an * next to Maris - you know where they can shove their *'s . . .

One last thought, even if he used performance enhancing drugs, it does not give him the ability to HIT homeruns. It may increase his strength, but you still have to have the natural ability to recognize a pitch, have the hand-eye coordination to hit it on the sweet spot of a bat with the right angle and direction to get it over the fence. Otherwise wouldn't Schwarzeneger or other muscle bound body builders be getting multimillion $ contracts to play in the MLB ?!?

Here we are in the midst of Spring Training; games being played in both the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues, and what are we talking about. :hmmm:

There have not been any posts in the baseball threads in two weeks  :28: There IS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY no doubt that this controvery is bad, very bad, for the game.
