Is it just me?
I'm 5'11", of average build, and I just can't seem to find a comfortable seat position that allows me to see the speedometer markings between 20 and 120. The only way I can is if I push the wheel tilt to the upmost position, which is not only uncomfortable (since I like to rest my hands on my legs while gripping the wheel), but ill-advised in the owners' manual. It says not to aim the airbag at your head.
I really don't want to be K'neebish about this, but I do like to keep an eye on my speed; otherwise I have a tendency to end up going ninety without realizing it.
Oh well, just one of those things, I guess. |

| I agree the steering wheel and seat are multi-position challenged. I have added this to my list of FIXES attached to my "survey". Have you tried raising your seat up? If you fiddle with the controls...you can raise it and tip it back just a little without too much forward tilt and your head should still clear. My problem is when I raise it and find the perfect setting...my knee hits my key case but it's minor. I'm about 5'5"...hubby is 6'3" and he found a decent setting, but I had to remove my (standard) key case cause it kept hitting his leg. He drives it with the wheel raised up and he leans back. I believe you're safe with the air bag at 12-18 inches away. |

DMor,
Problem is, when I raise the seat, I need to raise the steering wheel too! Tilting the seat one way or another is kind of out of the question for me; I just want to be able to get comfortable in a car without putting myself in some unnatural position just to see all the controls.
It seems that the dashboard layout is "suboptimal". Maybe it is just me, I dunno. |

Well...if it's any consolation...Hubby just mentioned he can't see the speedometer either without leaning forward or some other minor head adjustment. But said he has this problem in most cars, as the steering wheel tends to block the speedometer, and pays little attention to it. I think this is why he likes "cruise control" when he is travelling the freeway and probably why I start chirping when I see it hit 85. :):) The wood wheel looks to be larger and thinner than the stock wheel...but don't know.
Maybe someone with a wood wheel can contribute. |

I'm a little shy of six feet tall and I have the same problem. When I have the seat and steering wheel adjusted to a comfortable position, I can not see the top part of the speedometer(freeway speeds). It is frustrating.

| I too had to experiment with seat and steering wheel position cognizant of air bag deployment. However at 5' 7.5" I must be in the sweetspot of Acura design specs because the speedometer is just visible below the bottom edge of the streering wheel. Can't see the tachometer very well but no problem with the speedo. If you are worried about speed, get a radar detector and this may mitigate the problem.:D:D |

| I guess I must fall within the "sweet spot" as well. I'm 5'9" and I have no problems seeing speedometer. I had to check last night after reading this thread. |

| I'm 6'2" and have no problem seeing all of the speedometer. |

| I'm 5'11" and have no problem seeing the speedometer or any of the other gages. |

| Ray...since you have the wood steering wheel vs. the stock wheel, is there any difference in the measurement or thickness between the two? |

Hi D
Here is a Before & After comparison between the two....

Thanks Rail! :)
Wow! Great shots!! I can't see much difference other than the wood appears only about 1/8" thinner due to the absence of the leather wrap.
Hey...If I skin my wheel...'spose there's burl under there? :)

You let us know..... :D I'll send you my old one if you need it.
Best regards.

DMOR,
Just to confirm...the wood wheel is definately not as thick as the leather wheel but same diameter. FYI, I test drove a 2002 TL Type S with the wood wheel and it was substantially thicker than the MDX wood wheel...much better feeling and grip!!!
