vs. BMW X5 - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm in the market for an MDX (looked in 2001 but due to waiting list and delivery delay issues, I balked and ended up with a Saab) but I'm back looking again. I've considered the RX-330 (but a 6'4", I find the seats are not long enough to support my legs), and the XC-90 (because I do love the seats on Swedish cars) and today I drove the BMW X5.

I liked the truck a lot. It is not as quiet as the MDX.. the salesman uses that as a sales feature but the 3.0l engine is peppy enough.

The fit and finish, in my humble opinion, is better than the MDX and the size is better for my purposes. Features I liked which are not on the MDX:
two piece rear hatch with auto matic closure
radio with rds
a feature to adjust the heat in the top center vents separately from the ACC and a heating steering wheel
tilt and telescope on the steering wheel

But the MDX had other features that come in the base package which the X-5 doesn't have:
3rd row seat (and tons more space in back with the 3rd row down)
6 CD changer (option on X-5 and in trunk if you get it)
tire pressure monitor
standard leather interior (option on the X-5)

In the end, the MDX is still number 1 on my list with the basic reason being mostly price... the base X-5 with only a sunroof is Canadian $10,000 more and it is just not worth the difference although the X-5 is a little more sexier and has some nicer colors, etc.

The quest still continues....

I felt the same way when I was car shopping last year. The X5 was a nice car but did not have enought standard equipments. By the time the X5 was equiped with basic options, it was upward of $10000 more than the MDX.

thnk I'll try to Touraeg to get it out of my system.

Foeget the Touraeg, go tests drive the Porsche Cayanne V6, you will not be sorry.

But the Touraeg is at least 15k lower in price. I can't understand how people can afford so much car and love them so much that they are willing to spend so much on a car! If I was buying a Cayenne that is 50% more expensive than a MDX, I would think that I am just tossing it away.

Get a MDX! X5 does not handle snow well. Check out this review

quote:
The design goal was "beat winter." Thus, the MDX has a type of four-wheel drive aimed at snowy, icy roads. In a comparison test, a prototype MDX kicked the goobers out of rivals on snow and slush in the Rocky Mountains. Mercedes-Benz ML320 and BMW X5 fell on their faces in the slick stuff.

Using that same logic, I would say you'd be better off getting the MDX over the X5 given what you yourself said about the extra cost of the X5 just to get to the level of a standard-equipped MDX. :D

dham,

I agree with you!. But I think my holding back from committing to the MDX is a concern that the MDX isn't a car with a soul... A great performer but not exciting. That hasn't been my take on the MDX in test drives but my overall impression of Japanese cars (including Japanese cars built in America).

By the way, I went into a Volkswagen dealership on Saturday to try to test drive the Touareg and for the second time I tried was unable to do so. Both dealers, on successive Saturdays, did not have them available for a test drive.. How do the expect to sell them!! Liked the interior fit and finish but not spacious as the MDX.

I'm getting closer to the MDX as the truck to choose/:)

The X-men
The Porsche Cayanne V6 is about the same price as the X5 or the Touraeg V8, but if you live in Canada, MDX is the car to buy since its so much cheaper there.

If price is such a concern, why not just get the pilot?
saloveku
In Canada, the price difference between the MDX and the Pilot makes me wonder why anyone would buy the Pilot. Loaded, it is only a few thousand lower than X.

The 3.0 X5 is underpowered.
