After struggling to achieve even an average reliability score for six long and humiliating years, the 2003 M-Class (ML350, ML500, ML55) has scored an "average" reliability rating. So in its sixth year the M-Class finally hits an "average" score. The current 2004 model should be at this level as well.
CR still rates the overall reliability score for the M-Class as much worse than average (the dreaded black dot) because it factors in previous years. The average for the 2003's isn't guaranteed if it doesn't age well. And the "average" score is still well-short of the competitors that are either "above average" or "well above average."
Unfortunately for MB, M-class sales have dropped significantly as the model has aged and competitors have hit it. Resale values have been very un-Mercedes-like.
A redesign isn't due until the 2006 model year. Hopefully it won't take six years for MB to get that one's reliability to at least average. I'd be very interested in the next-gen but I wouldn't go near the first or second model years, and would still be nervous about the third. |
