If one wants to upgrade the audio in a MDX touring, what is the best thing to do at different price ranges?

In other words, what give the most bang for the upgrade buck if you want to spent say $500. extra and what would you do if you were spending up to $1k more?

My priorities are clearer sound and good bass. ::confused:

saloveku,
That is an incredibly subjective question. It just depends on what you want to spend and what is important to you. Some people have replaced components one at a time and others have replaced everything all at once. I started with new front/rear speakers and sub. The speakers made a pretty big positive difference, but IMHO the sub upgrade is worthless unless you amp it.

I finally ended up amping the fronts and the sub and I am very happy with it. Others have amped all 5 channels and been happy. Others weren't happy until they added a new head unit. Some are happy with the Bose the way it was delivered. So you see it is very subjective.

You could swap the speakers for Infinity's for around $120 and be happy. You may get a sub amp and sub and that might do it for you. The best advise is to go listen to a lot of speakers and subs and see which ones you like. This will give you a better understanding of what is out there and how much things will cost. Search here, too and see what others have done. Good luck!

phins2rt,

Thanks. But my dilemma is that you can't really listen to speakers in the actual car environment to demo them and get a sense of how much difference a new speaker would make. Do specs make a difference? Are there specs for the MDX standard rig? I really will only be looking for cleaner and bassier sound; am willing to upgrade but probably don't want to spend more than $1k

saloveku,
$1K should get you a pretty good sounding system when you are done. I think my upgrades cost right around $600 and I did the install myself.

I think you still want to listen to as many speakers as you can to see if you can hear any difference in speakers that cost $100 vs $500. If you can't hear the difference, then I wouldn't pay the money. Just about ANY speakers you purchase will make this system sound better.

Specs would be more important depending on whether or not you plan on amping the speakers. If you don't plan on amping them, then I would go with a more efficient speaker. IIRC, the Bose amps are rated at about 12 watts so you will want to get as much out of the amps as possible. The Bose speakers are 2 ohm speakers. So going to an after market (usually 4 ohms) will drop the output volume somewhat.

The sub could end up costing a bit if you don't go with a free air sub. You would need to make a custom enclosure for the sub and this could be expensive depending on how you do it. But again, that is something you would need to listen to before hand so you could make an informed decision.

Hope this helps. You might want to check out car audio forum. It might help in making your decisions.

Thanks a lot. That's helpful. Must find a good shop in town for this stuff.
