| We have been experiencing two intermitent problems with the transmission. The first problem was a failure to upshift from either 1st or second gear. We had to slow or stop to get the tranny to shift. The second problem occurs at low speeds (e.g.: heavy traffic on the freeway). I feel a slight clunk as I press the accelerator slightly and the engine rpms jump up but the tranny seesm to be in neutral. It reengages 1st or second gear when the engine comes back down to idle and I press the accelerator again. The dealer replaced the solienoids and cleaned the throttle body 3 weeks ago in an attempt to solve the problem. Also, the check engine light came on when the tranny came out of gear and has stayed on since. Its going back to the dealer tonight for round two. Our X has performed great up until now; it has 33K miles on it. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? |

| Yes - I experienced similar problems, as have a number of MDX owners. The symptoms are similar to thoise who have had transmission failures (like me).:( |

There is a member whose name is ByeByeChrysler. You might want to consider changing yours to ByeByeTranny.
Seriously, looks like you are going to be getting a "new" transmission. I doubt that the dealer is going to make any more "repair attempts", I suspect that they are going to simply order the tranny.
The good news is that you are still under warranty, should be glad it didn't happen at 52K miles.
Out of curiosity, do you tow or subject your MDX to "difficult situations"? There has been discussions about tranny problems but they have been "dismissed as rare". Some [me] are a bit skeptical of just how solid the tranny really is. |

| The dealer did order a new transmission this week. We never tow anything with our MDX. We do lots of mountain driving both in winter and summer. We don't drive it off road other than the occasional dirt road. |

deluce,
Thanks for the answer. Sure wish that you had reported that you were hard on the tranny (e.g. towed heavy boat frequently, played a lot on the sand, etc.).
Curiosity: Have you ever had your tranny fluid changed? If so, did the dealer report any anomalies? If not, have you looked at the tranny fluid (color, odor, etc.)?
Thanks in advance ... srpbep |

| I followed recommended mtce. I know they changed the fluid at the 30K service. Don't remember if they did it at previous service. |

Wow ... normal tranny at 30K, fluid changed, etc ... 33K tranny bites the dust ... hmmmmmm
Tim, are u out there? If you see this, how about an update on 01/02 tranny failures. Is this still an "almost never occurrence" or has the incidence of failure risen with age/mileage? Please note that I am just asking for your experience at your dealership. If you have access to more info and choose to share, that would be welcome but don't want to put you in box. |

| I probably should clarify my last post. The 30K service was done at 32K miles and the transmission was having a few problems when we brought it in. They changed the solenoids and cleaned the throttle body and we drove it for 3 weeks. The problem wasn't fixed but was a bit worse so it went back in. |

Since you mentioned mountain driving, it is possible that your tranny fluid got hot a few times and perhaps had you changed it at 15k, the tranny would have never failed? I've heard that 90% of all tranny failures are due to overheated and used up fluid (which happens extremely fast when it gets too hot, which is very possible without a tranny cooler) - in your case I would not be surprised due to the "extreme" mountain conditions. Just my 5 cents.
I drive on flat terrain, but will still change my fluid every 15k just to stay on the safe side. |
