Hey all, as many of you noticed, the Great Mileage Post has been on vacation for that last month, partly because I was out cruising the countryside myself, and partly to let a whole bunch of new data build up.
Now that there's this flurry of folks poking around all the buttons on the AC systems and trying out the Big Clock, this seems like a good time to put out a new Call for Data. Here's the deal - push the History button on the Trip Computer - this sends you to the History screen and you can see your last 5 trips. If you touch an individual trip, you get more detailed information. What this mileage study is interested in is the average MPH and average MPG reported on that screen. A typical report looks like this:
Dist MPH MPG
135 34.1 17.9
218 28.7 16.7
294 32.2 17.7
228 29.4 18.1
If you know your octane, note that too.
There are a bunch of Senior Mileage Members from the first time around: mogur,kk,worm, lwe, wen, mhar, MesaB, RR, as well as a bunch of you who have been waiting for me to get my act together.:) So this is the week - send in some data and I'll start the number cruncher. Now that we've all broken in our engines and started driving conservatively, the mileage should be getting better, huh? :D
If this makes no sense, you can track the original posts at:
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...p?threadid=1035
The results, complete with the usual thoughtful insights, pithy comments, and blatant misinformation we've come to expect on this site can be found in the Gallery at
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...d=7748#post7748
(BTW, I’m wondering whether to start a new thread in the Gallery, or to continue with the original thread. This whole idea of adding new graphs for new datapoints reaches new heights in poor use of bandwidth, but I hate to lose all those great posts...)
So get out there, check it out, jot down some notes. And while you're there, touch the clock, just for grins! :D |

I just got back from a 750 mile trip this weekend in the State of Florida and as many of you know 99% of florida is flat.
This means no hills or valleys. Just smooth highways with hardly any turns worth noting.
Where is this leading?
To the fact that after a 750 mile trip with cruise control,
my highway mileage was 21.5. I noticed in city driving 12 to 16, but mostly 15 was likely.
I don't know how ACURA was allowed to get away with promoting the MDX at 17/23. From what I've experience and seen here in the mileage posts, 17 for city driving is rare as is 23 in the highway on a costant basis.

What I learned on my last trip what that the maxed-out mileage rate is very sensitive to the last tank of gas I put in. Within half an hour of pulling out of a gas station and onto the freeway, I'd know what the best mileage I was going to get out of that tank was. The best I did was 24.5 (Holiday station in Proctor, MN, if you're every passing by :)), most were around 22-23, and a couple schlagers came in at 20.5 - most all were 93 octane.
So - bottom line - if you're not satistfied with your mileage, shop around a bit - there's a lot of variation among vendors, and the MDX seems sensitive to it. |

|
| I have tried every gas blend Amoco, Shell, etc.Always 92 or 93 grade. Have not notice a difference. |
|
|
|
| I am at the 14K mark on my MDX (still love it) and my MPG averages between 18.6 - 19.3. I travel 52 miles one way to work each day and typically cruising along between 80 - 85 MPH (love the Texas highways) other than the last 5 miles to the office. The one long road trip I took where I slowed down to 70-72 MPH I got 21.9 MPG so as you may expect the best MPG seems to be in the 65-75 range and then starts to drop off after that. |

| Sorry, ghost, we have no new, decent data to report. The Wife has taken control of the car and it is now a suburban errand runner. I check the mileage outta curiosity; it's usually in the 15mpg neighborhood on 93 octane, but the average speed is usually in the 20mph neighborhood! |

| Like Jorge, I live in the great flat State of Florida... just a little south of Jorge (hey, neighbor). I've been averaging in the 19's during my weekly commute, which consists of 15-20 miles depending on the route, with about half bumpergating. On one trip I took to Orlando right after delivery, we were in the high 19's driving steady in the 80's on the highway portion. In the city, the mileage really dropped down! With all things considered, I'm pretty pleased getting 19's with the size of the MDX. We'll see what happens during summer... |

Guess I should post some of my own numbers, here's a bunch
MPH MPG Octane
37.6 18.6 92
42.5 20.5 92
51.9 23.3 91
36.2 18.6 92
41.7 18.8 92
49.3 20.7 92
63.3 23.6 93
61.8 21.2 93
27.7 18.1 93
58.2 21.9 93
55.9 22.9 93
54.2 20.3 93
32.3 19.3 92
41.9 20.3 92
This includes a bunch of freeway trips, (Not so free in Illinois, I wish they'd just charge $15 when you enter the state and be done with it...), pretty easy to tell where they are. Still holds true that if you want good mileage, put that hammer down! |

Well, I'd have to say I'm a happy camper. At slightly less than 1000 miles, I'm getting 26mpg consistently on the 5 and 405 freeway, and between 17-19 in town. Wow!
The best part is that the trip computer has become a sort of a game to hubby (aka formerly Super Mario) and his driving has become more conservative and fuel efficient. That's what I call a win-win situation :) |

Wow, that's great! Is that watching the instantaneous mileage on the left, or the recorded mileage in your History database? Can you send me some of the numbers from your History file- you could be the one to pop the lid of the charts. Tell your hub that he'll be leaving Wario, Luigi, and Yoshi in the dust! :D:D:D |

Ghost,
Just at 10K and the mileage has consistently gotten better as the engine/trans keeps getting smoother. I have always used 93 octane and had some pinging in second to third gear until 5000 miles. None now - just silky smooth.
I have always gotten good highway mileage but around town was down in the 12's and 13's mpg early on. Very happy to report that with only city driving over the past two weeks I'm right at 17.6 (without a light foot).

274 17.7 31.7 92
278 16.0 26.1 92
Haven't hit over 20 mpg since my first two tanks of gas. :(
Most of my driving is city driving. Well, even taking the freeway during commute hours *is* like city driving (20-25mph tops!). |

I just made a trip home...from Tampa to Beaufort, SC.
I only use Exxon 93 octane...I was getting 24 MPG @ 70 MPH
and 22 MPG @ 85 MPH...both using cruise control.
I am seeing 18.8-19.3 on the daily commute, about 15 miles in traffic...I was jumping up -n- down with excitement as I was filling the gas tank on my trip... |

a fairly constant 18-19 MPG for 4000 miles. Have not had one problem with the vehicle...still love it.
Really is a solid vehicle...just those darn mirrors whcih are not considered a problem, just more of an annoyance.
Have been recently pulling a 20 foot runabout with it and still no problems...really was worried about towing, but so far no problem.

Enough of this frivolity let's get down to the data. You can add the following to my data points on your latest graph including one that makes the San Diego Charger, DMor, look like a turtle:eek:
182 miles 17.7 mpg 73.1 mph 93 Octane Shell
303 miles 18.8 mpg 50.5 mph 92 Octane Shell
159 miles 16.5 mpg 28.4 mph 93 Octane Shell
110 miles 17.2 mpg 28.6 mph 93 Octane Shell
302 miles 17.9 mph 33.1 mph 93 Octane Shell
The first trip was all highway driving between Indy and Peoria on I-74. However, there were a number of contstuction areas and Semis kept cutting me off in the left lane so I had slow down and then reaccelerate which affected the mileage. The second trip had a slightly different grade of Shell which I purchased in Will County well outside Chicago. The only explanation that I can come up with is they get their gas from a different refinery since they are outside of Chicago's attainment areas. This is the only time I have seen premium around Chicago that was less than 93 octane but still had ethanol. |

Overall average since purchased is 20.5mpg including multiple snowstorms. The only time it has been on the highway was bringing it back from Mass to Maine. If anyone is interested, if you place the pump on slow fil,l it will hold 23 gallons. It's got to be one long pipe. Going to Mass. next weekend, so I'll be looking for an improvement in mpg.

I have about 2200miles on the MDX. I travel about 10miles on the 405 to work and various trips around town. I get around 16mpg. On longer trips i get around 21mpg. Similar to Liberty I play a game with the trip computer and History to see if I can beat my last data point. It definately makes me more conservative on putting my foot on the pedal. Now I cost to stops and when I am going down hill. Does make a difference. Hopefully, Mileage will get a bit better with time. I too would like to know how Acura was able to post the 17mpg in the city.

Yeah, great speed, but 17.7? Look what you're doing to my curve!!! Looks like that slide rule's sagging a little lower than we thought! :D:D

Recent trip from Hampton Roads, Va to Melbourne, Fl - avg 24.9 mpg, 93 octane, A/C on.
Recnet trip from Hampton Roads, Va to Ann Arbor, MI - avg 24.8 mpg, 93 octane, no A/C, alot of hills. One leg of the trip I actually got 27 mpg!
Around town, 50-50 highway/local mix I get 22.5 mpg - 93 octane. |
|
|

I just returned from a trip to Lake Tahoe from Sacramento and back.
211 miles at 21.7 mpg using 93 octane Exxon. Used the A/C a little on the way up and none on the way back.
Typically I get 17-18 around town. I live 8 miles from work. I am happy with that. |

Ghost,
Got a couple of points in the 40s to round out my curve:
290 mi 18.1 mpg 36.3 mph 92 Octane Marathon no ethanol
191 mi 19.1 mpg 45.1 mph 93 Octane Shell
231 mi 17.4 mpg 36.9 mph 93 Octane Shell
226 mi 17.2 mpg 34.0 mph 93 Octane Shell
323 mi 18.8 mpg 40.3 mph 93 Octane Shell |

And went to Peoria. Peoria has a lot of stop lights so there's alot of stopping a going. I burned almost 1/2 of a tank. Usually I get around 20 mpg because I live in the country and it's at least 5 miles for me to get into town, but I usually go farther. Yesterday when I did the stopping and going I only got around 17 mpg. Not much more. It makes a big difference if you live in a BIG city.

| First long trip in my MDX (796 miles round trip) from Williamsburg, VA to Mendham, NJ this past weekend. Averaged 23.8 mpg on 93 octane if the read-out can be believed. I avoided the Interstates where I could and didn't need AC for most of the trip. The vehicle was a joy to drive. |
