Has anyone seen the new Dish HDTV reciever/PVR? the 921
It costs $999..the price seems more ridiculous when you still pay 5 bucks a month for leasing it.
However, a very good HD reciever runs about $600-800. This is a PVR with a 250 GB hard drive. Enough? Thats a 180 hours of standard programming and 25 hours of HDTV.
2 Firewire and USB ports, etc. etc.
The April issue of Sound & Vision has a full test of it. Impressive looking too.
Specs for the Dish PVR 921
- High definition, two-tuner, PVR satellite receiver
- 250GB or larger hard drive for storage of HDTV & SDTV programming
- 8PSK Compatable
- PIP for standard definition content
- 8VSB Tuner included, for reception of off-air analog/digital
broadcasts
- DVI / HDTV digital interface for connection to an HDTV display
- 1394 iLINK digital interface for connection to a D-VHS
- HD Component Video output for analog connection to an HDTV display
- Future Internet support

I'm aware of the 921 and have been following its progress. I usually am one to be on the "bleeding edge" but in this case I'm waiting a bit for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I already have two Dish PVRs (a 501 and a 721). While neither of them are HD, I also have a Model 6000 HD receiver from years back. All the PVRs work great and I wouldn't be without them. However in the first six months or so of a life cycle most of the PVRs go through growing pains that work themselves out during software upgrades (which download automatically from Dish.) This time I decided to wait the six months instead of going through the inevitable "beta testing" phase.
And then there is the issue of Dish and Viacom. It was bad enough when Dish decided not to offer the YES network (I have a DirecTV set-up for just this). However, when they pulled the plug on CBS, even for a couple of days, it made me take notice. Do I really want to invest another $1000 in equipment for a company that jerks the customer around? If there were a leasing option for the 921 then I'd already have one. Right now I was planning to get a 921 in April. Now I'm going to wait a bit.
The 921 is a remarkable unit. Unfortunately, Charlie Ergen's company (Echostar) is not so remarkable.
I'm waiting a bit. The only thing I'm missing right now is time shifting for HD. And I'll soon have other HD recording options (not to mention the HDPC option.)
So many toys. So little time!

I own the 921DVR and it is a really great unit. The majority of the reported problems have been with the 8VSB tuner section for OTA H/D. I have not had any of the bugs that other people have had with their 921’s. I guess I was just lucky getting one that was problem free. The firewire and USB connections are not active at present. The firewire is supposed to be activated later this year by software upgrade. I don’t think the USB will ever be used for anything. The 921’s are currently on a distribution hold pending a fix for the major bugs. The latest information is that it will be released again in late April early May timeframe. Let me know if I can answer any further questions.
