Brake dust - Click HERE for Original Thread

After only 200 miles, I see that there is a problem with brake pads dusting, particularly on the front wheels. Is there an alternative brake pad? On a prior car I had ceramic brake pads installed, and that cut down the dusting by a good 90%. Or am I just too picky?

You have every right in the world to be picky. I have seen the problem worse on other cars. Personally, I just wash it off when I wash the car.
Not ready to change out pads, but maybe when the original are ready to be replaced it might be a consideration. Pads that last longer and give off less dust, may also score the rotors more. That does not HAVE to be the case. It's just a consideration.

I had a BMW before I got my MDX, and the BMW looked worse after 15 minutes of driving then the MDX looks after 30 days of driving.

I use simple green to clean it. Spray it on, rub with a brush, then rinse it off.

I agree with ASN:

Until you have owned a Mercedes or BMW, you do not know what brake dust is!!!

Just wash it off.

BTW, more dust on the front is perfectly normal as the majority of braking is done is done by the front as opposed to the rear.

I've used EBC Greenstuff pads for my audi and they signficantly reduced the dust. Performance wise, about equal to factory pads.

Tirerack has a few pads for the MDX

pads

Haven't tried those and I don't know if they could possiblly affect the dealer honoring the warranty.

Those all look like nice alternatives to consider.

How could they affect the warranty? You can use any aftermarket parts for wearable items, they do not have to be Acura/Honda parts.
Of course if they caused damage to other parts on your MDX, those would not be covered if it can be proven they were damaged by parts you installed or had installed.

I'm just paranoid after some negative experiences with a particular Audi Dealership in NJ.

I'm sure most dealerships won't mind, but I could forsee a situation where a service manager would deny warranty coverage of warped or prematurely worn rotors.

Just my 2 cents.

On our Volvo, we get a nice thick layer of brake dust every week. The problem is that the car comes with really soft pads and I live in a "mountainous" region.

Well, after 2200 miles, I guess the brake dust is not that bad. We also have a Jag with wire wheels, and it is really, really bad on brake dust. I think I can live with the small amount produced by the MDX.

Wax your rims and the brake dust becomes a whole lot easier to clean.

Agree with hockeyplayer. I was shocked at the amount of brake dust on the wheels when the X was new. A couple coats of Zaino on the wheels and the brake dust all but disappeared.

A man w/a G35 knows brake dust, does he not?
And I bet hock'll back me up when I say "what brake dust" w/r/t the X. You ain't seen nothing.

Use a wax or polymer on the wheels (preferably the latter, as it'll resist the heat and last longer) and it'll come off easy. I use Zaino on mine, too. Easy off. Just a wipe.

You know it Worm:29: But the Zaino does make an easy job of cleaning. I also found that after applying Zaino to the rims if you edge the vehicle just over 100 mph that the brake dust just seems to fall off the vehicle.:D
