I just ordered a Dish DVR, and in support of it, picked up a small Back UPS supply. I read where it is possible to lose data (programming info) during a power failure when the HD is writing to the disk.
By adding a BackUPS you have not only removed that possibility, but you have a system that can survive during a power outage. There is no reason for a satellite system to go out during an outage if the receiver and/or PVR is still powered up.
Of course, if you are home when the event happens, you can not watch anything. You don't want the TV display on the UPS because it will suck the battery power to nothing in no time.
Even the small UPS (350 V/A rating) will power a small pc and 15" monitor for a few mintues. It should go quite a while with a only a receiver/PVR as a load. |

Yes, I have UPS all over the house, including PVR, TV, radio, etc. I have to take them apart and remove the buzzer or else the noise is really annoying when the power goes out.
On your choice of PVR....
I have Dish501, Replay5040, and TiVo Series 1, Series 2, and DirectTV TiVo.
If you have never had a PVR the Dish one will probably be fine, however the DirectTV TiVo is good enough to consider switching to DirectTV just for it, which is what I recently did.
If you have any specific questions about the differences I will be happy to respond with my opinion. |

Thanks for the info, Xstatic. I am getting the DVR 510 which will do me fine for now. It is my first and I've done a lot of research on the subject. I realize Dish is a problematic because the programming is time based instead of name based. That is kind of stupid.
But based on the amount of TV that is watched, and all the other factors, it should do me fine. Eventually I may want something better, or Dish will upgrade software and make it better.
As far as taking out the buzzers in the UPS, I don't get enough power outages to warrant that.
Ironically, a couple of days ago I was bragging how Dish never makes solicitations to sell more programming, etc. ...and guess who called this morning?
Maybe ordering the dvr triggered my name to come up. Hopefully, it's not a trend. |

I have 2 of my PVRs on UPS and one not.
We get enough power "blips" in our area, however the one not on the UPS has survived many of those. One time the power protection circuitry kicked in and the unit wouldn't come on but a full unplug for 10 minutes fixed that.
Perhaps I've been lucky so far with that "one" unit. |

I am sure in most cases, nothing will happen. Of course you still want to have spike/surge suppression.
I think it has to do with the power failure happening at a critical time. |

I do have at the very least surge protection.... so that's saving it as much as anything else. |
