We're giving away what a lot of people on my site consider one of the best stereo receivers ever made, the Pioneer SX-1010. This one, however, is special, as it will have a custom exotic hardwood case made for it, as well as having all of the circuitry gone through and updated with the best electtronics currently available. Here's a description of the mods to be done, described by the master EchoWars from AudioKarma:

"1) All electrolytic caps will be replaced, with the exception of the caps in the tuner (not necessary...) All signal path caps will be replaced with BlackGate caps, and the rest will be Matsu****a FC 105C low ESR caps. This includes the muting circuit, phono amp, tone control amp, power amp & driver stages, protection circuit, and the power supply.

2) The stock bias and offset pots will be replaced with nice stable Bourns 25-turn trimpots. These allow both adjustments to remain where I put 'em for a nice long time

3) All switches and pots will be flushed with DeOxit and followed up with ProGold. The pots will also get a shot of Caig lube.

4) Output transistors will be checked for equal gain, and matched pairs will be installed if my picky ass thinks they aren't close enough.

5) If the tuner exhibits problems (unlikely, but possible), they will be addressed and whatever steps necessary will be taken to remedy them.

6) Additional cooling in the form of passive heatsinks will be added to the stock regulator heatsinks. This is (IMO) the one weak area of this amp, and any extra cooling is a good thing.

7) A fairly common problem on this and other early Pioneer receivers is a failure of the power switch. The switch conducts all current going into the amp, which is a problem since the 1010 uses fairly large 18,000µf filter caps in the high-current supply, thus inrush current (the current through the switch when you first power it on) is very large. I will add a soft-start relay/power resistor combination to limit this current to a nice acceptable low value on power-up. After about 500mS the relay (a 24V 30A unit) takes the power resistor out of the circuit and allows full current to flow.

8) It is possible that we may change out the stock 18,000µf power supply caps for Nichicon 22,000µf KG Gold caps. There of course is not an unlimited budget here, but if it does not take much to get the amp up and running then I intend to ask for the 'go ahead' on this one. Of course, if the stock caps exhibit any deformity or leakage, this will happen regardless.

9) All lamps checked and replaced if needed, and a thorough cleaning and polishing inside and out will be done to make this sucker sparkle!!

So that's the plan. The end result will be a SX-1010 like few others. I plan on making it as reliable as I can, while coaxing it to sing like Pavarotti. "

Here's a picture of the unit. Grab this opportunity to get a chance to own one of the finest receivers around, it only costs a buck :)

Sounds cool, but the problem is, if I won, I'd have to blow 15-20 grand on a decent set of speakers. And maybe a new CD player, too.
