Ad in my local paper for a VW dealer says: '04 Toureg $4004 savings from MSRP - over 20 in stock at this discount
I was kind of surprised. I thought these were hot sellers??? |

They were/are hot. They were very hot when they first came out because everyone was praising them non stop.
Now that they have been out a little while and people are reacking up miles on them the problems are showing up.
I am a VW/Audi guy myself, and know that they are notorious for LOTS of problems in their first production year cars, more so than other manufacturers. I think people are either waiting for the 2005's or just looking at other SUV's since the Toureg isn't being rated as highly anymore. |

| I belive the Touregs/Cayennes all have electrical problems resulting in recalls. |

I looked at the Toureg when it first came out and posted on this board.
In a nutshell, very nice interior but small - much smaller than our MDX. In fact I read somewhere that the interior cubic space is not as large as a Passat Wagon.
Other negatives include, overweight, poor handling and poor gas mileage. I guess being fat is the main cause.
With gas prices reaching and probably going through $2.00 a gallon for regular, and premium higher, poor mileage is a concern.
What I really think happened is that there is always a lot of hype for a new car, especially German. Then after the initial "I have to be first to have it on the block" subsides, reality sets in.
If you notice I am leasing a Porsche - so I am not against German cars including Porsche.
But I predict the Cayenne will also fall flat on its face within the next 5 to 12 months.

Care to elaborate?

The Cayenne recall is due to a wiring harness that is positioned too close to a parking brake spring mechanism. It affects about 22,000 vehicles from 2004/2003. |

Dear DaveI
Yes: Again, only my opinion, when cars/trucks are way overpriced for the job they are intended to do, sales cannot be sustained.
An SUV was never intended to go 130+ mph. You can buy a Porsche Carrera or Boxster for substantially less than a Cayenne.
The Cayenne has "status" and a "niche". But after the initial sales, how many people are going to pony up upwards of $70,000 for a mid size SUV that gets 13-17 mpg. I suspect far less than 25,000 per year which is the number of units Porsche has slated to ship to the USA.
Two other items: Right now there are 11, yes 11 Cayenne's sitting in my local Porsche dealer's lot! Maybe they are all pre-sold????
Second item: I was skiing in the Alps this past winter. There is a complete dearth of SUV in Europe, even in ski areas. The SUV is a Middle East and USA phenomenon. The SUV craze is centered in and primarily exists in the US.
After all is said and done, SUV's (including our MDX) do not handle, corner or ride anywhere near as good as a car. The ride of a comparably priced AUDI/LEXUS/BMW/MERCEDES BENZ blows away every SUV including the Toureg and Cayenne.
Finally, most SUV are used to haul family to ski slopes, camping or run errands in town. The Cayenne is overkill times 100.

I was going to post about the same thing. Maybe they want to unload them. |

Those are all good points. It will be interesting to see how Porsche does with the Cayenne, now that the initial hype has worn off, plus the fact that they're starting to roll out the V6 model, which has some un-Porsche-like performance numbers(0-60 in about 10 sec). At least the 'S' and the Turbo offer greater performance than their relative competition, although at a significant premium. |

The electrical recall is a very quick fix, not a big deal at all. |

| Almost bought the Cayenne, but I thought twice about the price. I just couldn't justify it. Then the electrical problem came out. . . |

Is that Dirito advertising the 20 units @ $4k off? Yea, you can get pretty much any "trim" level of the V6, so long as they have it in stock, at invoice or invoice+$500. The 6-cyl isn't moving well.
VW is also subventing leases on the 6-cyl. You can actually lease all very well equipped 'Teg for less than the Pilot right now. |

Dear TheWorm:
Can you imagine how foolish those who bought when the Toureg first came out at list or close to MSRP!!!
Besides normal depreciation, they are now experiencing additional $4,000 depreciation!
Another basic reason I always lease.

Audi and VW are notorious for electrical problems in general.
The Cayenne is def more of a status thing than anything else. I mean come on....if I'm going to buy a porsche is isn't going to be a big heavy SUV.
As for people feeling silly about paying MSRP....that goes for just about any car. When the MDX came out people were shelling out sticker too. I know a lot of people that paid sticker for the 04 MDX....and I just got almost $4000 off sticker. So I don't think that is specific to VW.
But yeah....a close end lease is nice when the car starts depreciating faster than expected for whatever reason. |

| A first year VW is as bad as most American cars. If you are lucky, There will be nothing major wrong with it, just a bunch of little things, enough to drive you crazy. VW are typical German cars, when working properly, it is a fun car to drive. |
