Did y ou get a pen? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Kind of an off the wall question but...

I was looking through my manual and began to admire the leather organizer it came in which holds all the warranty brochures and paperwork. I noticed a slot down the middle of this organizer and it looks like a place for a pen. I remembered Mark, the salesman at Acura 101 West, taking out a very nice Acura pen from a plastic wrapper for me to sign the papers when he covered the manual. Then he quickly placed it in his desk.

Was that very nice pen supposed to be in that leather organizer?

I hope my observation is wrong because if you did get a pen, ...................
Yup, comes with the pen.
Yes, I did get an Acura pen and a key chain. It's an ok pen. But I like the key chain. Go back to your dealer and take that pen!
Yep...it's a pen.

Tell 'em you were about to fill out that survey...but they took your pen!! :D:D Then ask him if he kept it to fill out all those free service coupons? Work 'em!!!

Got a pen, never used it. It's still in my leather holder. I like the keychain that they give you too. Pretty snazzy.
Lmeans
Tell them you want the pen or at least a one thousand dollar rebate! I know all the dealers are theives but this is a new low.
I got the pen and a key chain with the number for roadside assistance engraved on it. I also got another key chain with a miniature MDX attached. Nice!
I did! I got the pen that came with the book, and I got a fat silver MDX pen in a fancy silver case - it weighs about a quarter pound and sits on my desk at work. People come in to my office and say "Wow, nice pen!".

And I got a bottle of wine! Not great wine, but it was a nice thought. Of course, I'd just given them all my disposable income to date, one of my cars, and the first year of my kid's college education. :) But its a fine pen, you need to go back and get the one off your salesman's desk. Maybe bring someone to distract him.

7plus, I'd be glad to get you a pen. PM me with your address and I'll send you one.
Any other MDX accessories you'd like to get rid of, I'd be happy to help : )
Now is that "Customer Service" or what???

But I think there is a bigger issue I need to deal with, MY PEN that still sits at a desk in Acura 101 West! This pisses me off! It's the principle! They are not getting off easy on this! Can't wait for that survey to arrive. I'll keep you posted...
Wow...the 50th person to PM Tim gets the SILVER PEN...hey...thanks Tim!!! :D:D:D

Tim,
I will take the bottle of wine that GHOST received.
I already have the pen and key chain.
Received the MDX pen, keychain, hat, and travel mug.
Yes... got a nice "silver" pen in a "silver" case... still sits in glove box unused, but it is a nice pen! No mug, tho!

Hat! Travel mug! I didn't get a hat or travel mug!

Hey Tim!!!

Darn all I got was a payment book.
I'm not above bribery, you know..... :D

A nice bottle of Asti Spumante does wonders!
I got a pen and nicely engraved keychain but no hat or travel mug.
I got the keychain too. But to my surprise I received a box of Gimmee Jimmy cookies in the first week after taking delivery. I am not a cookie person but those cookies are incredibly good. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Bet they made sure you had a pen in your hands when it came time to sign the check!

Nah, it was a bottle of a nondescript California Rose', hardly worth your while. Go get yourself a bottle of Rosemont Chardonnay or Shiraz to celebrate your MDX; they're under $15 and just great wines.

Although we should really get our wine recommendations from the Burgundy MDX crowd, I've heard tell that they actually go and pour their wine into a glass before drinking it! Of course, they have to listen to John Tesh CD's while drinking it, so there are trade offs... :D:D

I think we should run a quarterly sleazy dealer award - I think yours takes the cake so far.

MB-
I got the pen, plus I found in the glove compartment some touch up paint. Heck, they gave me the cargo mat, which I didn't even want. If anyone in the RTP area of NC wants this, I'm sure we could swing a ridiculously cheap deal, even beating Tim's prices by a large margin!

Yes, this is very true, we Mahoganites prefer to drink wine from glasses, not from brown paper bags or with straws. We also seek out bottles of wine with corks rather than screw tops or jug handles.

By the way, ghost, I bet you are old enough to remember the advertising slogan "Wanzer on milk is like sterling on silver." Does this mean that you Silverinians drive around with milk mustaches?:D:D

Before I forget the main point of this thread, I got a nice pen with the manual and key chain but no mug, hat or bottle of wine.
Well..

I got the pen, the keychain, and a desk mat. I like the pen but it is in the glove box. I love the desk mat. It has a picture of the the SS MDX on it and I have it on my desk at work. It looks like a very large mouse pad. I love it.

The dealer could have kept the pen, but the mat, well that had me sold.

Bought the pen and got a free MDX. Tried to use it (the pen) and it didn’t work. Tossed it and am still using the one I got with my 96 TL. Got some other stuff but not nearly enough to make up for the grief the dealer put me through to get it (the MDX).
... and MDX key chain, scale model MDX, extra key fob, free cargo cover & net, free wheel locks, free 2-years of maintenance, free Vehicle Protection Package, free channel covers (for roof rack removal) and ...

... free mocha cream coffee every time we go in! Did not get shirts, hats, or travel mug. The travel mug is cool, wish I'd asked for that.

Guess I'm not that old, what's Wanzer anyway? Is that like Ovaltine? We mercurial silverinians have been known to have latte mustaches though.

But I am old enough to have my synapses misfire and confuse mahogany and burgundy! :o But we were talking about wines, and Burgundy is a wine, so it does make sense, in a viticultural sort of way. But enough graping already!
Why do they call it a "glove box" or "glove compartment?"

Back in the early days, it got awfully cold in the cabin. Heaters either didn't exist or were not very efficient. In addition, many "touring" models did not have a top -- just open space. Gloves were a must (like they are with motorcycles today), and the glove box was designed to keep them safe and sound while the travellers went to dinner or retired for the evening.

BTW -- the word "trunk" (AKA "boot" across the pond) started out as exactly that: a travel trunk mounted at the back of the vehicle. The names, in both cases, stuck.

I did get a pen, found in the manuel case. Did not get a key chain or a travel mug. I guess I'll have to ask Sid (my salesman)why he shafted me. But aside from that, he's a nice guy.
Big Al
Yea newjack, I think we got a pretty good deal. That's our way of "pretending" we paid less than MSRP.

By the way I posted elsewhere that Edmund's current (as of 5/15/01) True Market Value for an MDX Touring /Navi is $40,465. That is an average sales price of $1015 over MSRP. So I guess everyone who paid "only" MSRP and got any freebies at all got a pretty good deal.
Let's see, got the mudflaps, wheel locks, extra oil filter, touch up paint, key chain, 2 ss MDX travel mugs and oh yes, the pen. (least they can do for MSRP?) Free loaner car if in for repairs, (hope never).
Tom Gattorno, dealership Manger at ACURA in Montclair, NJ gave me a big fat silver pen in a cool MDX case during the "Premier Event." I keep it in my glove for show purposes.
lol !

It's cool !
:D

I got the keychain with the 800 number on it. But I didn't get Acura pen, hat, travel mug or bottle of wine. I did get the "Motor Trend SUV of the Year" stickers. I guess that's only because they want me to do some free advertizing.

I wished I had gotten the wine because I usually like wine and dnner when I know I'm about to be screwed (on the base price, let's not even talk about the options).

You would think that since the dealer wouldn't budge with MSRP (I shopped around and another dealer wanted 4K over MSRP) they would at least give you those little "give aways" to make you feel a little better about your purchase.

I did receive a card from my sales person stating that they hope I like my new car, and if I know of anyone else that wants a Acura, if I could "kindly" recommend them to her.

I almost forgot, I did receive the scale model of a silver MDX (though I would have preferred a NightHawk Black like my own) but I got it from Tim at Hondacuraworld as a gift after I bought about 2K in options. I feel like my business was appreciated more by Tim then it was by my dealer.

I think that if Acura want to present itself as a "Luxury Status Auto maker" that can compete with the likes of Lexus, BMW, Benz, etc... They should put procedures in place that make sure that dealers dont get away with this petty crap of holding back on the "give aways". They should also make sure dealers stop over charging for the car and options. As far as I'm concerned I bought an Acura, they made the car not the dealer. It's Acura's reputation on the line. Acura should want "their" customers to walk away feeling good about buying a 40+K car.

A dealer not giving a customer a pen, hat, mug, etc... is the kind of nickle and dime tactic that I would expect from a used car dealer. It seems like such a petty thing to do. The bottom line is that these dealers make Acura look bad.

I love my MDX but no matter how good a deal you feel you got, you still walk away feeling screwed.

Sorry for the ranting but like most or all of you. I work hard for my money and I like to feel good (little warm fuzzys) when I spend so much of it.

Nuff said. Now I must go. I'm late for therapy. :p
Hey...I am glad someone else asked this question.
I didn't get the pen either. Of course I bought a demo MDX...maybe that is my punishment!!
I should have paid better attention to the 'signing' pen I used at the dealership.

I did get the key chain...but I guess we are not supposed to put it on the same chain with the remote lock??? Yes or no??? (the manual says something about other metal is not good for the remote device)

Anyway Tim...if you have access to more pens my leather portfolio case looks incomplete without it.

Thanks,
Mary
Thanks for the explaination Pierre. That makes sense. I guess the name just stuck with what they used it for in the olden days even though we don't need gloves inside the car anymore.

HEY 7PLUS-
DID YOU GET A PEN YET?
Lmeans

I'm stalling. Haven't quite decided on the game plan. I'm still waiting for the survey. Might use it for some ammo. Then I feel I have lowered myself to their level. Then I say "What the F***!, I feel screwed, I'll screw them back!" (I had some problems taking delivery but it is a long story I don't want to get into here. It did NOT go smoothly.) So I feel they could have thrown something in. Like members here suggested, it doesn't hurt to ask. So I did. First I asked for mud flaps, NO, then wheel locks, NO, then a simple extra key, NO!

So beware, if you ask for too much, they take your pen.

Can anyone post a picture of the pen and keychain. I'm really interested in ghost's quarter pound pen. How did you get that.
I also got the pen and key chain with the MDX. However, I think Acura is cutting cost is this area. When I got my 96 Integra, I got a box with the menu, inside, there was a key chain (different from the one with the MDX), a pen, a small flash light. a tier pressure gauge and a cassette tape.

Oh well, also got the MDX travel mug but from Tim instead. (Thanks Tim!!!)
At Rick Case in Ft. Laud, FL they include Wheel Locks on all MDX's. In addition, they gave us a nice leather travel bag and a pair a plane tickets to one of several locations, provided you stay at a pre-arranged hotel. The bag is nice, other than it having the dealership name on the side. The plane tix / hotel deal doesn't seem that bad, provided you could stay for the number of nights required. I think we have a year to use them, so we'll see where we can arrange our next vacation. We also ended up getting a bottle of touchup paint after a license tag screwup. Oh yeah, the pen is where it should be.

I saw one of those up for bid a few days ago on ebay. Just search "acura mdx" on ebay.

I received a pen and a nice key chain for the valet key. No hats, mugs or tee shirts.
Maybe the salesperson just used it to write something and forgot to give it back. When we got ours the sales manager used it to write something and almost took off with it but our salesman reminded him. I think you should just ask for it. It might just be a simple mistake. As for the survey, I think Acura give $40 to the salesperson per good survey plus some awards and stuff so i think it can be used for a free oil change or a full tank of gas.

MannyE
Hmmmmmmm Not all salesmen are like Tim.

...most are like the Hamburgler..they just can't help themselves...

I can't wait to pick up my MDX and see if the pen is there!

If my past experience is any indication...I'll be amazed if the leather cover is there...lol

I got one! Think my wife threw it into her purse, though....either that, or it's still in the nice manual case that came with the car :)

Well, I pity the fools who missed out on their pen!!!!!!! I received not only the pen....but ONE acura keychain with emergency number on back of the fob.....and one set of keys on a twisted used piece of wire....talk of luxury dealership treatment. When i noticed the one keychain was sprung, the salesman replaced it and ....catch this....did me the big one! he got me the second keychain on the sneak to replace the piece of embarrassing wire. Since this great treatment from my dealer before i finally had even paid for the X yet, I invested in WWW.ACURAMDX.ORG license frames so I could get the only trace of the dealer's name off my car! By the way, I have the X for a month, when do i receive a survey to fill out? i can't wait! hehe:11:

We got a pen in the owner's manual case, another silver one (really nice) with the dealer's name on it, a MDX 'golfing' keychain with a magnetic, removable divet tool and chip (which the DH has), along with two additional leather key fobs with the dealer's name/number on them.

The only 'forced' option we had (which were planning on getting anyway) was the Vehicle Protection Package (wheel locks, etc.). We also added some additional accessories: rear splash guards, moonroof visor, cargo cover, cargo net, cargo tray, free first maintenance visit (75K)...all for no extra charge.

We also get free mocha, vanilla, or toffee flavored coffee, water, or choice of various juices along with a loaner car whenever we go in for service.

We got a nice pen in the manual. And we got some really yummy homemade cookies in a nice thankyou canister. We enjoyed the cookies and thought it was a nice touch. We only received one keychain and my dh had a spasm and the salesman promised another. We have had the car three weeks and the keychain came as promised. Loved dealing with Duval Acura in Jacksonville FL.

I also thought it would be classy for a dealership to give out dinner for 2 tickets.
Cookies are OK though.
At least they didn't give you donuts. That would be classless.

I got a pen and the key chain for Road Side Assistance. Also received a letter from the dealer thanking me for buying the X. No cookies, no wine.......nothing

I picked up the MDX yesterday (yay!) and there it was in its nice pleather cover. A black Acura pen.

I'm hoping to take pics and post soon.

Esserman Acura....hoo boy. No opinion yet...but I don't hold out hope.

They took me to the finance guy to try and sell me some smoke and mirrors total-loss policy... 800 bucks and it only paid off if the car was stolen AND totalled ONLY in an accident....so if the car was stolen and appeared stripped and was totalled because of that, out of luck...I'll just put my 800 on red.

He then became visibly and violently upset (like I had somehow insulted him) when I asked about the price of the extended warranty (7/100 no deductable), quoted me 2500, and I told him I had been made an offer for 1750 online. Intimated I was lying...then proceeded to lie to me and tell me this was the only time I could buy an extended warranty. He soured an otherwise pleasant experience.

The salesman was very good, as was the guy in charge of explaining and delivering the car. He threw in mudflaps and wheel locks for free. He also spent over two hours with us showing us the car and all its features even though his quitting time had come and gone. I didn't finance the car, however, so didn't have to deal with the finance people beyond the aforementioned unpleasantness. I can see how if you had to deal with the folks in the loan department why Esserman has managed to get the lowest ratings in the dealer section.

I'll be posting my own ratings after the first service experience.

Hey Manny, congrats on receiving your new X. Ain't it just GRAND?:D Sounds like your dealer's Financial guy needs some attitude adjustment though. Maybe he's jealous that he doesn't have one! I have to say even the financial guy at my dealership was very LOW pressure. Didn't try to sell us anything, and he didn't even talk about the extended warranty until I brought it up! Anyway, glad your experience with the Sales staff was good at least, and heck, you got your Baby now!! What color is it? model?

Ghost...great snow pix!! I imagine living in MN you must get tired of that white stuff in the winter. How does the X drive in the snowy conditions? Do you put snow tires on it or chains? Just curious for when winter rolls around and we decide to go to the mtns.

But the sales person forgot to sign my owners manual. I will stop back and have them fill in the dealer info area.

It seems the last few vehicles we had were either bought at fleet sales, or through fleet managers, including the X, (which was really an internet sale) and totally circumvented the office of the finance manager. But then always had my own financing up front ready to go.
I suppose that would be different if Acura was offering some incredible rates I was unable to match.
MannyE
That's one of the things that really ticked me off. I also bught my car through the dealer specifically because I want to spend as little time at the dealer as possible and limit my involvement to the internet guy.

Anyone who has bought a through the internet knows by now that the experience is fantastic because you're meeting with a very happy salesman who doesn't have to work you into a car. The deal is already closed.

So why they steered me into this moron's office I'll never know. I guess MSRP and the crazy profit they make on this vehicle isn't enough!

I see it's a sunny morning on Miami Beach...so I'm going to hurry and see if I can't snap a few pics before the storm cloud roll in!

Who the heck gets all this stuff? TRAVEL MUGS?!?! I wanted travel mugs. Only thing we got free was two silver key fob thingies... didn't even get a pen... bums... lowlife dealers (no offense Tim)... we had to pay for everything else... wheel locks and everything... a good 80 bucks gone on that...

Haha, look at me, getting all heated... it's my dad's car... Anyway, yeah, we didn't get anything free, 'cept those key fobs with the roadside assistance number on the back... Tim, can you hook us up with some travel mugs or something? :2: That would be really useful for my dad and mom, as they travel to work in the morning. I wouldn't mind it either... have a nice silver Acura travel mug in my Civic... related products :)

For all those who got all the goodies, congratulations... you lucky bums... :D

Hi Lilypad - as you might guess, the MDX is great in snow; the cross-terrains are just fine, I've never felt a need for snows or chains.

Do a search on 'snow' when the time comes, lots of discussion from folks in the mountains.

Funny that we're talking about snow in July - right now I'm off with our 4 bikes mounted on the new Thule hitch rack (1st road test), going to take a ride along the north shore of Lake Superior! It's a beauteous day - 80, sunny, no and humidity! :D:D
