Rear Window open - vibration, like car is going to fall apart - Click HERE for Original Thread

Please help!

I was driving along and decided to open the rear windows. Then all of a sudden there was a vibration noise (not the infamous drone). It was as if the whole car was shaking and vibrating. Once the window was closed the noise and shaking stopped. It's like the air gets trapped inside and creates a turbulence. Has anyone else experienced this? Please let me know if there is something I can do - I have never experienced anything like this with my other cars & I've owned other SUVs before. Thanks.

Search is your friend, very common aerodynamic effect.

I've had many cars and SUV's do this over the years.

My '40 Chrysler did it, my '48 Dodge did it, my '59 Volvo did it, my '63 Studebaker did it .... (skip a few years here, as all those cars did it, too).... my '93 Explorer does it, my '99 Accord does it, and the MDX too! It's just physics.

And there's a good physics-based solution - open another window! It keeps the resonance from setting up.

I actually had both my rear windows open and when the vibration occured. Thanks for the responses everyone. One of those links mentioned that weathertech deflectors alleviate this problem. My last vehicle had these and I never heard the vibration so you can understand my shock.

Also, anyone else having trouble with the search feature? Whenever I try to search I get a page not found error.

Today was a goofy day on the site, I know that Admin was trying to chase down a bug for awhile, and I couldn't log in for a half hour or so (just as I was finding hot news in the tire world)

I'll have to see if that happens with both rear windows - my first instinct when one of the kids lowers the back window is to lower my driver's side window, that clears it up.

I agree with ghost. My experience is that I need to crack one of the front windows to "kill" the buffeting.

I've found that it also works to tilt up the sunroof, it does the same thing as opening a front window.

It might add a little noise, but it stops the vibration!
