Incorrect mileage on new odometer - Click HERE for Original Thread

I don't know if I need to be worried about this or not.

A portion of my odometer was not illuminated (extremely dim) so I took it in to have it serviced. At the time, the car had just under 50k miles. The dealer attempted to replace a bulb (or whatever illuminates the mileage) and when we picked up the car the odometer indicated mileage at 14,534

The dealer is ordering a new odometer. I need to leave my car with them three days while they send the new odometer off to Michigan for calibration. While the dealer is dumbfounded about how this happened, they're very reassuring that this will not be an issue if I ever go to sell the car (no tampering).

I've never heard of this happening. Anyone else had this experience? Can someone tell if the odometer has been replaced?

I am not an expert on the legality of replacing odometers. I would think that if it is possible to reset the new odometer to just under 50K, that would be the right thing to do. If new odometers all read zero miles, be sure to disclose the fact when you sell your car.

Reset odometers is can be detectable. Your registration documents provide a paper trail that can be researched. I'm not sure if they do it every time, but dealer do check mileage pedigree on trade-ins.

Misrepresentation of mileage is a biggy in my book--the sort thing that could get you stabbed. Anyone who sells a vehicle and fails to disclose known mileage issues deserves merciless physical retaliation from the suckered buyer. After your beating, the cops would haul you to jail where you would remain for the rest of your life.

I know that with replacement Audi instrument clusters, the mileage can be reset ONE TIME with the dealer's computer. (I think that feature may go away after it is actually used for a while). This lets them replace the odometer and set the new one to the proper mileage. Acura may or may not have the same feature. It would make sense. If I remember correctly, with Audi the number had to be input in kilometers rather than miles, and this at times messed up the result if the dealer wasn't aware of that. But 50K vs. 14K, I'm not sure why that would happen.

Sadie, and All:

Listen, when we have the right to pay a freaking 40 grand for a new vehicle we have our own rights! You know what I mean ? Let the vehicle better be "NEW"

I picked my new MDX last week - have no major complaints yet.

However when I picked up my Honda Accourd EX/L 3 years back for 23 grand I realized there was a light brown color stain on the white paint. I took back the car to the dealer and told him about this. He said he'll buff it.

I said there is "no" point buying a new car and having it fixed on day one.

He then proposed a free paint protectant coating...

I refused!

He said he can't help it...and asked me to leave.

The next thing I did was, I stood up "SCREAMED" at him and "THREW" the keys at him and said I'll come back with my lawyer...Every single customer stopped and looked at me and my wife was also ashamed too.

The GM walked in , apologized and asked me to pick "any" vehicle from the available lot.

I walked out, picked another white accord and re-did all paper work and drove out the new car out!

It's time we spoke guys! You own your money you own your rights!

You are not paying for a second-hand/used car, are you ?

Cheers.

These are the rules for Michigan
4-6.1 Actual Odometer Reading Known. If the odometer is being repaired or replaced and the actual reading is known, the new or repaired odometer may be adjusted to register the actual mileage. No door frame sticker is required in this instance (see Section 4-7). 4-6.2 Unable to Register Same Mileage. When repairing or replacing an odometer incapable of registering the same mileage as before the repair or replacement, the odometer must be reset to zero. A notice is then attached to the left front door frame specifying the odometer reading before the repair or replacement and the date it was done. Thereafter, the vehicle must be sold with the mileage brand listed as “not actual.”

sadie,

Have you talked with the dealership working on your MDX?

It is most probable that you will receive your X back with the correct odometer reading. I think you are worrying about something you don't need to worry about.

Just set it to 0!

Why not?
