I wanted to say thanks to all of you for your postings! This board has become a way of life for problems with the X. I was driving the other day and "BAM" on comes the check engine and vtm-4 light. I went home looked at the manual for no answer then to the board. There it was Bad EGR valve. I took it to the dealer explained what happend and let them know that I believed it was the EGR from the postings here and sure enough it was.
My 01 X only has 27K on it. A note for all of you. Over the month before the lights came on I had trouble a few times with the X not wanting to start. You would crank and crank and it would not start. So it is just another problem that should be noted in the more than one list of possible problems.

My wife's EGR apparently went out, with the check engine light but no VTM light??? Someone else had mentioned that there was extended warranty on emissions components: only on the cats and manifolds. The EGR valve is a customer cost item; although with only 65K miles on our '01 its just too soon. The customer service rep also said the manifold ports get clogged with carbon and they would be cleaned out; I have experience with that on another car in which the ports were so tightly clogged with carbon it took an hour poking with a clothes hanger to clean them. At any rate the total will be $235; not too bad for SoCal.
