Anybody use bass shakers? I got a couple of freebies from my HT seat mfg.. I mounted them and was amazed they work quite well.
I would not use them to 'replace' a quality subwoofer, and use them only for action movies, not for good music. But great for accenting the bass in mystery and horror movies. The gas explosion in the casino, near the end of 'A Good Thief' is a great example of how much realism they can add. Especially if your theater room has a slab floor.

They are cheap. I have seen them advertised on ebay, etc. for around $20 a pair.

Typically you get a Y cable for your subwoofer, and put the additional input into an auxillary amp. The amp output goes to the shakers.
You want to mount these away from any reclining mechanisms which might resonate in kind. Putting them to rear and on a very solid board, an inch thick (3/4" or thicker) is best.
They are 4 ohm, so you can put them in series if you are concerned about overloading an amp. The input to your amp should already be conditioned for bass ( .1 ) output. So the shakers will not be trying to reproduce higher frequencies. A good test disk is Star Wars II. You will likely find out you have the level too high within the first couple of minutes.

For you gamer freaks, you can mount one on your computer chair.

I was thinking of mounting under the floor instead of a chair, what do you think now that you have the running?

I have them, too...and I concur. Nice addition!!!

I'm using some cheap Aura BassShakers in the reclining sofa and reclining love seat of the theater room. I'll be upgrading to ButtKickers soon, though.

You are correct in that the idea is to have them ACCENTUATE the bass.....nothing more. If they are turned up too high they are nothing more than a distraction.

Exactly. I never noticed them at all during most of the movie (A Good Thief) ..but after the gas explosion I thought, "Hey! I like that!"

The light sabers in Star Wars are great for 'tuning' them. When the sabers sweep around and you hear that bass 'whomp' you can just feel them.

Other movies like Apocalypse Now, that have been remixed, etc. they are still effective for those close in mortar rounds, and napalm drops. But movies of that era did not quite have the sophistication of today's movie sound.
Civil war cannons would be quite effective, I'm sure.

Actually, that's what the Aura instructions say to do. I guess that was how they were originally meant to be used in a listening room.
This way any close by seating could 'feel them'. Of course, so could other inanimate objects that might vibrate.
