Car Washing - Click HERE for Original Thread

Just wanted to get some feedback as I am curious about what others do.

1. How often do you wash your X?
2. How often do you wax your X?
3. Do you hand wash it yourself or do you bring it to the car wash?

Depends a lot on the color! The black X always needs washing and waxing, it seems.

1. Hand wash once a week in spring, summer, fall. Power wash whenever possible in winter.
2. Wax 1-2X a year, I'll do more now with Zaino Z5, Z2, and Z6.
3. Never, NEVER automatic car wash. Commercial power-wand wash (50 cents) only to get major crud off, then hand wash at home.

I must have the absolute worst of all worlds.
A black MDX and I have been working at a company located on the waterfront with seagulls gallor. My MDX must have a bullseye on it.
As a result, I have been washing every weekend by hand.
It only takes me about 1/2 hour or so.
Fortunately, the clearcoat is well protected by several layers of Zaino, as the birdpoops wash right off with no residual impact.

I do, in fact, I'm headed there after work today.

Brave man gdot, too many risks at the car wash.

Scratches and rotor issues top the list.

Only bring your X to a drive in car wash if it's a lease and you don't give a rats a$$............................Mine is PIF (Paid In Full) ! An investment and don't want those monkey folks jacking my X threw their horrible car washes ! If I had a FORD Pinto, that's a different story....:1:

Being LAZY comes in many forms ! ;) ;)

Weekly, weather permitting. Used to wax 3-4 times per year prior to converting to Zaino!

Once or twice a week (depending on if it's dirty) Zaino a couple times a year.

Never a car wash. :3:

I wipe my MDX down with a chamois and bucket of water everyday. I clean the wheels with Simple Green and dress the tires with Amorall as needed.:29:

I use the local cloth car wash 1X a week in the winter and wash by hand in the summer. Detailed 2x a year. While I like the x to look good I am no longer fanatical about it and have moved to changing the oil at 7500.

When you guys say never a carwash, does that include bucket washing at a self service wash ? I don't have hot water at my house, and even if I did I'd most likely be washing in the sun. What if you were traveling with the X and you didn't have any choice ?
badulla
I think self washing places are ok, but I would not use their mop/brush. Bring your own supplies and use their water.

Thats my advice.

A simple Search will bring up existing threads that answer these and other washing/detailing questions. There are detailed discussions about automatic car washes; including the touchless variety. Merits and pros/con that involved winter-time; cold weather; and traveling away from home.

I've used a true brushless when I lived in San Jose (Tan's Touchless, Santa Clara on El Camino near Lawrence). But only on cold days or when time was a major factor. Have found no equal here in this locale, but one that is adequate. I have found no damage to the finish either when I chose to use one.
I usually have to detail more thoroughly after the wash. 90% of the time I wash it myself.

Handwashing using a bucket with lots of soapy water and good rinsing should be fine. The automatic washes, where you just sit there while large brushes and agitators beat the dirt off, are the ones to avoid.

Anyone out there had problem with the radio antenna going thru a automatic car wash or do you guys take off the antenna before hand?

If you plan to drive through one, take it off and put it on yourself, lest it be misplaced.
MDX4now
I never take mine off and it's been through all types of car washes with all types of dryers...never been a problem.

MDX4now,

It's probably safe to leave the antenna on when going through a car wash. Just make sure it is screwed on tight.:4:
