Hi, recently bought a used MDX for my wife and was wondering if anyone used an oil extractor to help with their oil changes. It goes down the dipstick tube and sucks the oil out of the pan. I use one on my VW Passat and it works great, no oil left in the pan (I've checked) and much cleaner. Plus you don't have to put the vehicle up on ramps, deal with belly pans, etc.
The dipstick on some vehicles doesn't allow the tube to reach the bottom of the pan at the lowest point. Just wondering if anyone had tried this with the MDX to make their oil changes a little easier. Thanks! |

| I bought a PELA Oil Extractor to use on my wife's Mercedes. None of the 3 dipstick tubes that came with it are narrow enough to fit the MDX's dipstick tube...:-( |

| The X's oil is very easy to change.....you don't even half to jack it up to get underneath to loosen the drain plug and the oil filter is a snap too. Buy the filters and crush washers from Tim, and do it yourself. You can also do a search as I think there are some posts with pictures. |

I did the first oil change on my X. I found the plastic flap is kind of troublesome. It is supposed to cover some parts but turnout also will block the oil from dropping straight down to a oil pan when you remove the oil filter. Worse, the used oil will follow the flap corner and spread out to other areas. Any advice to handle that? |

I use the Jabsco PortaQuick to pump out the boat's engine oil ... never really thought about using it on a vehicle (or even thought there were vehicles that you'd have to).
As for the "flap" ... I haven't changed the X's oil yet ... will soon ... but the Ody has an identical problem. I just use shop towels to try to keep the mess under control. Just seemed a lot easier than removing the panel. |

Not easily! 1 click on the ratchet, remove, reset by hand, 1 click, repeat. I have Rhino ramps for the next time around :) |

| I can torque the drain plug w/o jacking the car, and the oil from the filter can be a tad messy, but i put down some old towels to catch any drips. I think i'll try using my ramps next time to see if it is any easier. |

I have a "LiquiVac" that I got for the Mercedes and thought I'd also try it on the MDX. I bought mine from the MB club but it looks like Whitney also sells it now: http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs...=-1&PID=1460480
Worked great and got all the oil out - I measured what came out and also pulled the drain plug to see if any more were present.
Only change was a different mark on the draw tube because of the different dipstick length compared to the Benz.
Now if only replacing that oil filter were a little cleaner !! |

Oh_My_Baby, here are some pics as to how I handled that (stupid:rolleyes: )plastic piece to prep for oil changes! Hope it helps. ( I know it's to late for this oil change, but maybe later ones!) |

Good idea, a quick change in design! Got to love it! Simple and neat!

Would the mud enter to the engine from the cutout?
I'm about for the second 5000 miles oil change. |

| Isn't the purpose of the flap extending over the oil filter to protect it from potential road debris cutting the oil filter? I have always been able to pull it down, remove the oil filter and then wipe away any excess oil that gets caught in the plastic flap. |

It really doesn't let in that much mud / stuff. I took the pic from an extreme angle. From front on, it's not hardly noticeable.. Hey, it worked for me & I don't have to fuss w/ that piece of plastic or catching oil dripping. :4:
hammermdx.. it hasn't caused any problems on either of my MDX's yet! |

What is the hole on the cutout part for? I wonder if it must be used for something. |

I think that's where they planned to have the oil drain out if the piece was still in?........... |
