Strange Speaker Noise - Click HERE for Original Thread

Over the last few months my wife has been complaining about intermittent speaker noise coming from the right speaker in our '04 MDX. I could never reproduce this problem until we took it on a long drive this past weekend. About an hour into the drive I heard a loud electronic tapping like sound coming from the right speaker that lasted several seconds. This repeated a few times about 10 minutes apart and than I never heard it again.

This sound can occur whether you are listening to the radio or a CD and whether we are using the NAV (with voice) or not. I am guessing it has to be a problem with the amp as the noise is clearly electronic and does not sound like a speaker wire short or static.

Anyone else experience this? I am guessing it is going to be a pain to deal with Acura on this since it will be very hard to reproduce without spending much time in the car.

Quick question. Do you have a cell phone near or in the cubby hole under the radio. Cell phone cause interference that can be heard through the speakers.

No, the cell was not near the speaker. Good suggestion though.

ScottS2K,

The cell does not have to be close to the speaker. But did the phone ring (receive a call) which triggered the noise ?

Are you sure it happens with both the radio and CD? If it's just the CD, try a cleaner.

As it is , I am pi**ed off with my Bose system that I wrote a nasty letter to Bose. They never replied..I reminded them with a even nastier note and they said their service technician will speak to me very soon. Wonder where the hell is he! All this happened last week.

I told 'em the whole world of "X" owners are suffering and for proof visit our forum :p

I didnt mean near the speaker, I meant near the HU. Does your X have that cubby hole underneath the HU? If so do you place the cell phone near there or in there? There have been many instances from other Xers including me, where this has happened. Alot state that there isn't enough shielding on the HU itself.

The cell phone was located in a bag at the very back of the MDX. No chance that this was causing the issue. It also was not ringing at the time this problem occurred.

The problem definitely occurs with both CD's and the radio and it's only with the right front speaker.

I'm going to give Acura a call tomorrow. That should be fun....

I have the same noise problem once in a while listening to radio too and it bothers me. However, I have changed the Bose speakers to Kenwood's so the dealer will have excuse not to fit the right speaker.

Let me know what is the outcome when you visist the dealer.

Sounds like it may be a case of lose connection to the speakers. It may be a good excuse to upgrade your speakers lol.

I have the same noise intermittently coming from the right speaker, sounds like static clicking noise... I only listen to FM radio so I can not say if CD's produce the same static clicking noise... I guess I will play CD's for awhile to see if I can reproduce the sound. Maybe I will ask my dealer

I pulled the panel off and checked the connections which look good. The sound is also not one you'd expect to hear from a loose connection. The sound is more electronic in nature.

This is my wife's car and frankly she couldn't really tell the difference in speaker quality (nor would she care). However, the noise is driving her nuts so Acura should fix it.

I get the same noise. I even get it when I'm playing a DVD. Maybe a TSB for this will come out and Tim can post it.

I had the same problem. Whe I took my X into get an oil change last saturday I told them about it. It was the right speaker, intermittent static type noise for a couple seconds at a time. I knew that it would not happen when they were listening. Anyway they took it apart, said they saw the problem, which was a damaged speaker and replaced it under warranty. I have not heard it since!!! Kudos to Acura of Tempe!!

A damaged speaker lol, I should have known that, since the speakers Acura use are the cheapest money can buy.

Hi Everyone,
New MDX owner (04, red, tour/nav) and new to these boards (hi!).

FYI, I have the same problem that ScottS2k has reported. And similiarly, cell phone is out of the way, noise can occur with radio or CD, with nav on or off.

Just wanted to raise my hand now. Will hopefully find time to go to my dealer in the next month to resolve.

I think it's the Nokia cell phone, when I put that phone close to the radio of my wife's Lexus LX450, it reproduced the same noise as in the MDX.

We have the same speaker noise issue in our left speaker and have even had it replaced, unfortunately the noise remains. We also have Nokia GSM phones and have noticed that the noise will start sometimes when the phone rings, when you go past electrical towers or when your in the middle of the countryside where no GSM towers exist. The bottom line there is no repeatable characteristic other than the presence of our Nokia GSM phone.

Obviously this is very disappointing... combining this with the "brake clunk" and some belt noise we are not very pleased with our new MDX ('04 Touring).

So i feel like an idiot now... i just posted a thread under general, and didn't see this one... I've got 6000km on my 04X, and just as the weather started hitting the freezing point, i'm getting the same problem. I don't have a problem reproducing it either. It happens every day after i leave the car in the parking lot at work. Today, i thought my speaker was gonna blow, the pop was so loud. I'll bring it up with the dealer, since they already have to fix a sub-woofer "buzz" i've had since day one later this month.
OttawaMDXer
The service tech agreed to replace the stereo system... and the sub-woofer. Hope this solves the problem...
