My 04 MDX seems to have developed a problems(?) when shifting to the 2nd gear(I think). Rpms go ut to 3500-4000 most of the time. I took it to the dealer who told me this is normal and that's the way the car responds to my driving style. I'm no lead foot and don't really drive MDX like a race car, so I asked them to test drive it with me, and they still told me it's normal. Has anybody experienced any problems similar to mine? How high does your RPMs usually go?
Thanks in advance,
Alex

What do you mean "seems to have developed a problem" - is this a new thing? Has your MDX always done this? Or is this a more recent "development"? Clearly if it did not use to do this and now it does there is a problem.

well, I had the car for about 5 months now and in the beginning I did not really notice this, but it might have been that it was happening all along, I can't really tell. Also , dealer told me that the car has some kind of adaptive mechanism, that adapts to one's driving style. So maybe that's how the engine adapted to my driving? I'm considering going back to the delaer and test driving another MDX and comparing results. One fo the reasons I'm posting here is to see if others have their RPMs go ut to 4000 often.
Thanks again.

I've owned 2 MDX's now for a total of 3+ years and 50K+ miles and I have not noticed anything unusual about engine revs. Yes my rpm has been up to 4000 before when I accelerate; but nothing unusual.

By the way I've NEVER heard anything about "the car has some kind of adaptive mechanism, that adapts to one's driving style." :8:

The MDX has a adaptive mechanism that adapts to one's driving style, like in any other car with auto transmission. The harder you accelerate off the line, the higher the rpm will rev up to til it shift into second. The MDX is smarter in the above mentioned adaptive mechanism because of the drive by wire feature. Most of the time, my MDX shift into second around 3 to 4 K RPM. If I accelerate like a old lady, then it will shift at around 2 K, otherwise, if I really floor the pedal, it will shift at 5 to 6 K.

Many 03 owners complained about this when the 03's came out with the 260 HP engine. I am not aware of any one having this issue with 01 or 02's. Mine and many others have done it from day one, which tells me it has nothing to do with my driving style. The dealer says it is normal for the 260 HP engine, but I find it annoying. There were also many discussions about why the 03's (don't know about the 04's) tend to get lower city MPG than the first two years of production - I suspect that this is one of the reasons..

I understand why many of us find this annoying, but the high-reving 1st gear is actually a very good design on Acura's part - let me explain...

Torque is the primary factor in acceleration from a stop condition (low rpm's), whereas horserpower takes over towards the higher rpm's. Therefore, a high-torque V8 will "jump out of the hole" quicker than a V6. So, how do you make a lower-torque V6 "jump out of the hole" like a high-torque V8? Easy, give it a "tall" 1st gear! This allows the rpm's to get higher quicker.

This is helpful for quick accelerations, pulling a boat out of the water on a ramp, etc. Since the X is a SUV, Acura had to design the gear ratios for these "worst-case" conditions. Those of us that don't pull trailers or care about quick accelerations find this annoying, which I think is understandable. However, for those of us that do care about those things, having that tall first gear is a blessing, since a V8 isn't available.

My Acura CL Type S has the "Adaptive Mechanism" too, NOT just the MDX.....If you want to reset it, you unhook your battery for 30 min. or so. There are steps to take. I done it on my CL and it drove like a bat out of hell until it "adapted" to my driving style.......Ever thought why your X drove "SO" well after being serviced ????????? They clear the computer, very much like rebooting your computer at home when you left it on line too long........  ;)

I tested this when I was out to lunch and this is what I found also. When I switched it to D4, it shifted at 4k+ quite regularly.
