Today the wife had to fill the gas tank up for the first time and the Range indicator says 260 miles. I know this is an estimate but isn't that low ?? When I had my 4Runner it would start in the mid 300's. I better get more than 260 miles on a tankfull :(

Vinny,

Simple....

Acura has a 19 gallon capacity and 4Runner has a 23 gallon capacity.

If I take an very rough average of 15 mpg, lets see what the estimates would be -

MDX: 15 MPG * 19 gallons = 285 miles per tank

4Runner: 15 MPG * 23 gallons = 345 miles per tank

Moreover you's is pretty new, so 260 might just be okay. Give the engine some more time.

"X"'s are Gooooooooood!

Have fun!
Vinny
Thanks luvdodo :) I forgot about the 23 gallon tank in the 4Runner. I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it will go up soon ;)

After my first fill up this week I was at like 210 miles w/ average of 11 mpg.. OMG.. very bad gas mileage... Most of the driving is through stop and go side streets in my neighborhood so I was expecting something pretty low but was hoping for atleast 14 mpg.

Maybe after a few more weeks after its worked in I'll get some better mileage.

If you reset your trip computer AND one of your trip odometers every time you fill up, you'll be able to see some of the computing dynamics involved. The SUM of the trip computer estimate and the trip odometer will vary greatly -- low when in heavy stop/go traffic, high when cruising for miles at 70mph; this sum represents the total miles that the computer thinks NOW that you'll get on this tank. On a highway trip, I have started out with the estimate being around 250 miles; I have seen it rise to almost 350, with 100 miles on the trip odometer -- that's a range of 450 miles total, or almost 24mpg. It's not unusual to see the estimate rise while cruising.

I agree. Depend on how and when you reset, the trip computer would give you different readings. If stop/go traffic, mpg starts low and goes up as driving continues. If you reset when you start crusing on freeway, the trip gives out a very high mpg, say 24 and gradually dropping down as driving continues. Somehow I can never achieve 20mpg or higher.
I drive 90% freeway, 10% city. The price is 2.00/gal of premium in Dallas Fort Worth Texas now. Yike!!!

I filled the tank up again today. It took 17.8 gallons to refill the tank and I got 246 miles :( After the fill up I reset everything and the display said est 190 miles to go. Does that sound right ? :8:

Don't follow the range reading too much, you're wasting your time.
Just look at the mpg that's all it counts.
I think there is one way to save money: fill her up everyday with 89 and 93 alternately. As the gas price increases each day, you're saving quite a bit. :D .
If you don't see that saves enough, sell your rhino and order my new COWAGON hybrid ASAP. It's limited edition.

The estimated miles is based on the current and past MPG you've got on the current tank's load. If you filled her and got straight into a street stopping tons of times , driving slowly - thats what it would show. If you hit the highway directly at 55MPG , cruising, it might have showed to maybe 350 miles.

So wait until the tank is empty and lets see what it tell us.

I just ignore the wildly fluctuating Estimated Miles To Empty display until my fuel warning light comes on - at which point it usually reads between 40-60 miles. Try this experiment - rev the engine to redline a few times and see how fast the Estimated Miles reading drops.

Over 25,000 miles I am usually getting over 330 miles per tankful and averaging over 19mpg (sometimes get over 20mpg if the wife is driving). This is measured from actual driven miles and actual gallons filled as opposed to the display which is 0.5MPG optimistic in my car.

I am very happy with the fuel economy of the vehicle. The MDX is a huge 7 seater bus weighing 4400 lbs that is ULEV (clean) and can hit 0-60 in under 8 secs (quick). And its fuel economy - under the same driving conditions - is as good as my old Lexus IS300 and my current Infiniti G35 and better than my old Mazda RX-8 with the 1.3 liter rotary engine that got 17mpg.

I can see you as an athlete wearing big and heavier (if not lead)shoes than your petite wife. Normally, wives are more leadfeet than their hubbies.

She drives like a granny all the time and she drives the MDX 90% of the time hence the good economy. I drive like a granny too if the baby is in either vehicle (stay below 80mph).

In the G35 and on my own however I have been known to drive fast and accelerate quickly on occasion...
