Method for Alternating 93 and 89 Octanes? - Click HERE for Original Thread

In my part of the world Premium is 93 octane and mid-grade is 89 octane. In lilght of recent evidence presented in other threads that Acura's recommended 91 octane does indeed provide an advantage I was wondering about the possibility of alternating between Premium (93) and mid-grade (89) at the half tank mark.

I realize this is not a new revelation and indeed it has been discussed/proposed before in old mileage/octane threads. My question involves a user friendly systematic method of doing this. What is an easy way to remember which grade to put in? Is there a signal or indicator that could serve as a reminder?

What are your thoughts on this idea?

Assuming one starts with a full tank of Premium (93) and assuming you always fill up at the half-tank mark then:

93 + 89 = 91
91 + 93 = 92
92 + 89 = 90.5
90.5 + 93 = 91.8
91.8 + 89 = 90.4
90.4 + 93 = 91.7
91.7 + 89 = 90.4
90.4 + 93 = 91.7
91.7 + 89 = 90.4
etc
etc

I know how to calculate octane blends; I want a method for remembering WHICH octane I'm on? Say I try this and the tank is at the halfway mark - which pump am I on; is it the turn for 89 or 93?

Perhaps this is too simnplistic a question but I am trying to think of a simple foolproof reminder system - that is NOT something tacky like a sticker on the steering wheel

...sorry, I jumped the gun and posted the blend calculator before reading the second half you your 1st post. I saw your calculations in the 2nd and thought....

You can use the receipt as a reminder. Put it in the back left door pocket after topping off. Next time check it first, top-off, toss the old receipt, save the new one. But for the ¢s you'll be saving, is it worth going through the trouble at all?

... but I was striving for something a little more elegant; besides we charge everything and need to keep the charge receipts together.

You've got the navi, use the calendar reminders.

How about this idea?

Use the two trip odometers. Set up a system for yourself, such as if you are using the A odometer, you are running on 89 octane, so the next fillup should be 93. When you are on B, you are using 93 octane, and your next fillup should be 89.

Of course, that would only work if your X has two odometers (my 04 does, but I don't know about the older ones) and that you fill up when your tank is low instead of half.

In the "My next fuel type is " bulletin on the 'Friz , just write 8 or 9. I'm sure a lot of people read the bulletin first thing in the morning.
Your suggestion is great but then people have to remember what A/B for ?

I wouldn't think it would be too hard to remember. Just make A (#1 letter of alphabet/lower number) stand for 89 octane (a lower number) and B (#2 letter of aphabet/higher number) stand for 93 octane (a higher number).

But whatever works for you, works! ;)

Good Idea. I thought about that on the way home. Will show my wife that. She is whining about the yo-yo gas price.
