| Just received a call from the service consultant that my 2002 mdx with 13500 mi needs a new transmission. I left my x to have the "oil jet kit "installed this morning. I complained that I feel a initial bump around 2000rmp in light acceleration and everytime I took my foot off the gas pedal. That's my only symtom. P.S I had 1x atf changed in 10000 mi. |

First...I hope you got a nice loaner and get some good use out of it while your car is in the shop.
Second...as frustrating and the whole transmission issue has been in general, it is great that they found the issue on your car and are replacing it versus band-aiding it.
Think of it as a time bomb that was removed before it left you standed (or worse left the family stranded) somewhere.
You should ask them to do a free transmission fluid replacement at 20k, since you just had it done in. Actually, I would probably also want them to reinspect anyway after another 10k to make me feel better that the problem would not re-occur.
Post again after the service is complete and let us know how you were treated on this. Yours is one of the first posts that I have seen from someone who has had a replacement under the new program.

Quick question: Is the replacement transmission the newly designed 03/04 transmission or do they just put a rebuilt 01-02 problematic ones ? ? ? ? I would demand knowing from your Service Manager !
Tim, care to collaborate ? ? ?  :(    |

Just a SWAG ... 01/02 MDX gets 01/02 tranny ... probably other changes involved (mounts, drive shaft, etc.) other than just the trans. Then there is programming to go with the new trans, yada yada yada
Someone would have to check the parts lists but I'd bet on my SWAG |

Pardon my ignorance, but what does SWAG stand FOR ? I really doubt Acura would put 03 transmissions in the 01 or 02's......They just put the same "problematic poorly designed" transmission that has failed on the following:
01 Acura CL Type S
01 Acura TL Type S
99 +Honda Oddessy's
Honda Pilots ? ? ?
AND let's not forget the bread and butter model: 1998 + V6 Accords !
I belong to the Acura CL forum and those guys are outraged that NO, I repeat NO recall was made on the Acura CL Type S that has mountains of transmission failures and near fatal accidents caused by transmissions dropping out of D5 at 65 plus mph down to D2 near causing fatal accidents ! I know of 3 folks who had serious rear end collisions and or lost control of the car when it SLAMMED into D2 at 65 miles an hour on busy freeway traffic. I knew about the future issues with most of HONDA's V-6 transmission failures ! The O1 and 02 MDX was in the bunch. That is why I waited for the end run of the O3's with a newly designed transmission. I can obtain a very detailed report found internally at Acura. IT'S A DESIGN FLAW plain and simple ! My new 1998 Honda Accord Coupe EX V6 which I followed the manual by the book, took it to one and only dealership for 4 years ! At 78,000 miles the transmission was shot ! I may note that one week after I bought the car brand new, I found transmission fluid leaking ! I was shocked. At the time I was ignorant of Honda's design problem. In any event, with a threat of a lawsuit, they replaced it with no augument !
I'll get off my soap box.....but anyone surprised about your well kept MDX tranmission failing, DON'T BE SURPRISED ! |

Don't be so sure that the 03 and 04 won't have transmission problems as well. To wit:
Apparently the "new and improved" 2003/2004 transmissions have problems as well. My coworker's 2003 is in for a new transmission at 32,000 miles. It started shifting hard and slipping between gears. His dealer indicated that they have started to see a number of 03s coming in with transmission problems...

| Actually, I meant "Scientific Wild @$$ guess". I went to engineering school thus my WAGs with only the slightest of background info become SWAGs :2: |

Fabvsix ... Was your Accord V6 covered under the Honda warranty extension to 100K?
If yes, did they make it difficult (e.g. beat you up that it was your fault before fixing it)?
If no, please explain how you were able to bring yourself to buy more Honda/Acura products !!
ps -- We have an 01 Accord V6 and an 02 MDX. This "tranny stuff" sure has us thinking about change (probably Lexus). Don't want to argue/fight with Honda (been there, done that with 1999 Pissport EX -- ugly). Everyone makes errors, but looks like we are headed for 3 for 3 with Honda products (our last 3 car purchases). |

| Well after establishing a repore with the Service Manager, he has always supported my claims without question. It's called "GOODWILL" ! I believe in a POM (Peace Of Mind) by bringing your car to an authorized dealership, they most likely will not mess with you. I had a 4 plus year record with this dealership, which protected me in the long run. I still can call Keith ANYTIME with any questions, he is always there for me. Taking your vehicles to "Joes" shop is VERY risky with all the known weakness' with Honda's transmission. HONDA designs and builds Acura's ! |

| Just received another call from my service consultant that the transmission just came in! Much faster than I expected! Will be bringing in the x next morning and should be ready by the end of the day. wow! |

| Hope they didn't get it from a junk yard. Any thoughts? |

wlmdx,
You can probably sleep well knowing that Honda would not do that. You can bet that the tranny is a "factory remanufactured unit". In fact, they will even take offense if you say "rebuilt".
That said, you are getting a tranny with some known design issues. The reman will have at least one of these issues addressed (the gear overheating issue).
What they've done with the 3rd gear clutch pak ... who knows.
What other issues they know about ... who knows.
Hey "who", if you are out there, how about sharing the real scoop on the tranny ... some of us would love to hear it. |

| For those of you who had the transmission replaced, please give some feedback how the replacements worked out? Thanks. |

wlmdx I started a thread for the ones who are affected by the recall and the service when they took their MDX in,http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=17116 remember that thread is for those who are affected by the recall. |
