I have the older style body side molding on my X, but I like the 04 a lot better. Is it hard to remove the old molding? Has anyone tried.
Thx! |

... but try SEARCH to did up the old threads
I recall that using a hair dryer to soften the glue was involved. |

| yup a hairdryer or embosing heat gun ( very hot be careful) to soften up the adhesive then use wax dental floss to saw between the molding door. The you can roll the remaining off. The use goo gone or something similar. The use alcohol to clean it afterwards. BTW mark the centers of the molding on the doors with tape so you can line it up easier when you put the new ones on. |

| I just did that two months ago, took me about 45 mins. Not too bad, the key is to try to take the adhesive strip out in one piece. Use a heat source to help the process, good luck. BTW, the new BSM compare to the old ones are like day and night. |

Greetings from the Big Apple!
Just a note to all you MDX owners! I too had the drivers's door BSM come loose from the middle, I followed Warzau's advice and the I contacted one of our member (Wwong) who instructed me on what 3M product was going to get the job done! And Viola the condition was corrected! Kudos to Wilson Wong for his advice and his dedication to the members of AcuraMDX.ORG

Hi,
Has anyone tried replacing the wide BSM? If so, how did you get them unglued from your MDX?
You see, I installed mine after I already got a scratch, and the BSM didn't completely hide it. I need to take it out, do the usual stuff to fix it, then either put the old one back on or put new ones on.
thanks |

thec,
I did. I told the dealer to install the wide moldings pointed Up. That makes the profile so different on the front and rear BSMs, that I couldn't stand the way it looked in pictures. The light hit the front and rear at different angles, and made them two different colors.
3M makes the tape that sticks the BSM to the body, so I went to the 3M web site. They have instructions to remove body parts stuck on with tape:
3M says tie knots in monofilament every 1 inch. Use this as a saw between the molding and body.
I tried this with heavier and heavier monofilament, finally giving up with 40 pound. Forget the knots- the line will always break immediately at a knot. Dental floss immediately shredded. 30 pound monofilament without knots was the trick.
However, both times I did it, I cut through the molding edge without knowing it, and could not re-install the old molding. I had already purchased new BSM from Tim ($185), so I was at least prepared.
I also found that I needed to saw through only about 6 inches of tape, then I could simply pry the molding away from the body. Prying leaves a cleaner surface, too.
Had to use fine polishing compound to get the residue off. 3M has a product to do this, too. |
