We've got an 04. 6000miles on it.

No problems yet, but my wife and I both notice that until the engine is warm and has been driven for a few miles, the tranny shifts from first to second farily noticeably.

After it's warm, it's as smooth as silk. Never had another car do this - not even the 96 Exploder we just got rid of.

Anyone else feel this?

My 03 does this. AFAIK it is normal.

My 03 does it, as well as the last two MB's be have owned. I think it is a characteristic of the transmission and not a problem.

Maybe I really don't know my car. But with auto transmission, how do you tell which shift your transmission is on? I put it in D5 after starting the engine and off it goes. Where do you get the shift information? By your feeling or is there a reading somewhere?

By feeling. I noticed by modulating the gas pedal carefully you can actually feel it go into each gear. But normal driving it should be quite seamless.
Using the gas pedal and looking at the tach (while you keep an eye on the road :) you should be able to discern each shift.

Another dumb question, it is a good or bad idea to ease off the accelerator when the tranny shifts, sorta like a manual?

I don't know that it does anything bad or good. It is not designed to specifically work that way. Something to consider.
