| I know this issue has been discussed ad nauseum, however, I'd like to mention that I recently switched to 87 Octane in an effort to minimize fuel costs. I have since noticed pinging when driving with open windows and going uphill. I thought the knock sensor was supposed to sense this condition and retard the timing so as to avoid it. Any thoughts? I realize the simplest fix would be to switch back to 93 octane but at $2.50 a gallon, OUCH! |

| The other option is to try 89 octane (mid-level octane rated gas), and see if the pinging persists. I have never heard pinging using any grade in my 02' MDX. I use 89 octane rated gas. |

Quality of the fuel could be a factor. Recent dyno tests reported on this forum reveal a somewhat marginal perfromance profile when running 87 octane. For everyday commuting I don't believe it makes much difference.
I run 89 all the time, and have filled with 87 on occasion. Considering the tank is never completely empty, doubt I ever run with much less than 88 octane at any given moment.
I always use 91 for hard driving (long trips), bigger loads, towing, etc. The same test showed optimum power with 91 octane. Anything more is a waste. |
