I was wondering if analog converter boxes are compatible across all cable companies. Say if you are with comcast, would an analog converter box from insight or cox work?

I'm having some ingress problems with analog cable and trying to see if maybe a converter box will help out at all.

I could be wrong, but I believe EACH box is uniquely coded (digitally) to deter theft. It can be addressed by the local provider.
So yes, they may use the same kind of box, but I doubt if they are even interchangeable between homes.
But you did say analog, not sure what is analog anymore except the audio and video signal that is outputted to the TV.

Do I have the right to know from my cable company which converter boxes will work? I mean they give the option of renting or buying the box from them, but am I entitled to get a box from someone else?

No, it's not like a modem where you can use your own if it is compatible.

I am not aware of any legitimate cable boxes you buy from a retailer.
You have to lease boxes from the cable company.

Here is typical disclaimer from a cable box reseller:

"In the event that I am a dealer in cable television equipment, I will not advertise such products with the intent that the purchaser buys the equipment for the purpose of aiding in any theft of cable television services, nor will I sell or otherwise transfer any equipment I have purchased from Cablejokers to any third party who I may know or suspect may use any such cable equipment for the theft of cable service. I understand that if more than 1 unit was purchased, I am considered a 'dealer'. I also understand that if the product is defective, a dealer is only entitled to an equipment replacement and not a cash refund.

I, the purchaser, understand that certain types of cable television equipment, even though sold legally, may be used in an unauthorized manner to aid in the theft of cable television services. As an inducement to the dealer to sell me cable television equipment, I do hereby declare, under penalties of perjury, that I understand the federal law and various state laws provide for substantial criminal and civil penalties for the theft of cable services.

I, the purchaser, do hereby state that any equipment I purchase from Cablejokers will not in any manner, be used to intercept any cable television signal without proper authorization from my local cable company and payment of all lawful charges. Furthermore, I attest and affirm that I will only use the equipment in accordance with all Federal and State laws. All Cable T.V. products purchased from Cablejokers now and in the future will be used on cable T.V. systems with proper authorization from local officials or cable company officials in accordance with all applicable Federal and State laws.

As a further inducement to Cablejokers, I agree to indemnify Cablejokers, as the dealer, for any cost or expense which the dealer may incur as a result of my breach of the foregoing declaration. As a condition of this sale, you have warranted and affirmed to Cablejokers that you have or will receive specific authorization from your local cable operator or local officials for such use and that you have or will subscribe to full cable services-basic and premium. No oral will supercede this agreement. "
