With teams making their cuts and possible free agents on the market.

My Giants start with signing Warner. . . hopefully we get something close to his pre-injury days.

I'm still confused on why the Giants let Collins go, then get Warner... LL, any answer?
laborlitigator
Salary. Collins was around $7 or $8M on the cap as opposed to Warner who is around $4M. So, that basically an extra free agent that they can pick up.

Hmm. I wonder why Collins is playing for $2M+ with the Raiders? Why wouldn't NY/Collins restructure the contract the same way Oakland did?

That was the thing. He didn't want to restructure his contract here. It is puzzling.

Time and again we see that same situation. Very often the free agent signs for much less than he was offered by current team.
Must be a pride thing.

Well, the 49ers will be missed. Oh...there is still a team called the 49ers!! Sorry, almost didn't recognize them....:4:

I heard the 9ers were joining the Arena league. . . if they win 3 games this year, that will be a miracle.

Sounds like the Bay Area may be in for a looonnnnggg football season...:(
laborlitigator
If Gint's O-line holds up, Warner could be a steal of a free agent signing.
BLACK-BLING-MDX
I think the Cleveland Browns are gonna be a pretty powerful foce this year in the AFC. We have veteran now as our quarterback Jeff Garcia, and Kellen Winslow (granted we sign him :3: ). What do you guys think?
04mdx4sq
Good luck to you Giants fans with Warner. I am one of the people in St. Louis sorry to see him go. I would love to see him return to the QB he was pre-injury. He is a thrill a minute to watch when he is on his game. If he returns to that form, the Giants will have one of the best I have ever seen at the helm. He is also a great asset to the community as well.

mullysalt
How's that o-line? Garcia is an upgrade if he can stand upright. The trade for Winslow(headcase) was a big mistake. Give up a second to move up one spot, bad idea. Watch as the Lions parlay the Browns foolishness into wins.
laborlitigator
The Lions are the "in" pick this year. I'll stay with my Gints as a surprise this year.

New NYG kicker Todd France is from Toledo and a former Rocket!
I still hate the rest of those choking dogs but at least now they have a Rocket and a Man(ning).
Maik
Well, now that the regular season is about to begin, what is the consensis?

I like the Pats (big surprise), but I admit I am a little concerned on defense, esp at linebacker. Plenty of experience, but age creeps up fast at that spot.

Also in the AFC, I like the Bengals. Could surprise some folks. Baltimore looks to be tough, but still laking an offensive threat.

It will be interesting to see if Gunther can get some defense going in KC. If so, they could be a team to watch.
mullysalt
With the Pats upgrades in personnel (Dillion, Wilfork, etc.) and maturation of existing young players they are my pick to click and win it again. Of course injuries are the great equalizer but the Pats seem to have come through the preseason in good stead in that regard.
As for KC, the schedule is tougher but the team is better. I have faith in Gunther as DC, he will get them to play. Depth at MLB and WR is a concern. I would like to see them give J. Morton his walking papers but he'd probably drop those, too. I would also like to see the Chiefs trade for McCardell but according to Vermiel and Carl Peterson that's not going to happen. I worry about Dante working too much on O that it will decrease his effectiveness on returns. So, I think the Chiefs will be better but the record will be worse. I'm thinking 11-5 or 12-4.
xfactor
The Pats in a cakewalk. There are barely a handful of average to good teams these days. The Pats have no real competition. The Colts, Chiefs, Seahawks, Eagles, Ravens, and Broncos represent the 'second teir'. Not much to get excited about this year...:23: :24:

The Pats did not win the game, it was a gift from the Colts. It all counts the same in the record book but the Pats don't look too impressive right now.

Let's not forget the Pats opened last year with a 31-0 loss. I'll take a three point win over a very good Colts team no matter how it comes. 10 days off then the Cardinals, Go Pats!
mullysalt
It took until 10 a.m. for the first Pats post. Must have been some kind of party. Looked like the same old, same old to this impartial fan. Brady was awesome, Manning, Vandershank and James blew it.

Interesting comment...thats what most loosing teams say. Several of the Colts players said the same thing....again, after loosing to the Pats for the third time in 10 months.
Truth of the matter is, once again, the Pats MADE plays when they needed them, and the other team did not.
From the Pats standpoint, there was lots to be happy about. Especially the running of Dillon, which adds a whole new dimension to this team, two tight ends who could each be great, and a stable of wideouts that get it done. On defense, the defensive line will improve as the season goes on, but needs to get a rush on the qb, the LB's were far to often blocked out and there were too many blown dback assignments yeilding big plays. Having said all that, they still came up big when needed.
I have not watched the pregame show yet, but I will say that it sucked in person...except for the part when the banner was uncovered.

All in all, as a Pats fan, I'll take the win.
keremoner
As a Pats fan, I was a little disheartened, but not much since Berry will fix up the holes as a defensive genius that he is.
1) The 'hole' left by the departure of Ted Washington needs to be better patched. No one can easily replace a phenomenal player like Washington easily, but if the hole isn't fixed, teams with good RBs and OLs will run against the Pats at will.
2) The rule changes will affect Pats more adversely than anyone else since Pats are the most physical defense out there. They need to be more disciplined and cut down on penalties. They simply had too many penalties last night. Discipline is the key word and once again Pats coaching staff is well suited to readjust the team's attitude so the penalties do not occur as often as they did last night.
3) I know that it is too early in the season, but I thought players were a little 'flat' last night at times. Need more intensity.

JMHO.

Wow, I agree with Maik! The world must be coming to an end!

A "W" is a "W". In the end, who cares how it looks. No one remembers these games come playoff time. Even though I fast forwarded through most the Tivo recording (was at the Prince concert), I could still tell the Colts are still soft, and will not pose much of a threat this year. The Pats didn't even bring their "B" game, and still won. As I said, the lack of good teams these past couple years, make for easy pickings.

Championship rings tend to bring out 'flatness' early on. If I were a Pats fan, I wouldn't be worried at all.
m2pc
As a Pats fan, I like the Win, but as far as the seaon opener, I would think the NFL was very happy with the performance of both teams.

In terms of "did not win" both plays and mistakes were made on both sides, like Branches "gift" by dropping the punt, but come on, it all part of the game. I remember when the Patriots found constructive ways to lose, now they are finding constructive ways to win. I'll take the W and it was a pretty good game to boot.

Everyone says stuff like "the better team didn't win" oh well, I guess they are just very lucky.
laborlitigator
You have to admit, the Pats are getting the luck of the Irish over the last year or so.
m2pc
I admit to that:D

I know the O-line is pretty sub-par in rush blocking and hats off to Dillon to still get the yards. But the pass blocking was great this week.

I was thnking that the Pats would have a harder time 'cause of the enforcement of the chuck rule, but that didn't seem to be a factor for eaither side.

Hey Mullysalt,
What ya gotta say now about those Broncos? Jake gave ya 10 points & we still won. It's tough to play in Denver, just like it is in KC.
The Broncos had re-tooled well. I still think you guys have a good team offense, but you defense didn't change!

laborlitigator
Gints look like they suck again this year!
m2pc
But Jets looked good unfortunately.... ;)

AFC East.. I knew that NY would be a threat, Miami ..well stranger things (but not often) happen. Buffalo, wheres that revamped offence? Patriots better get that D-line shored up against the run (I knew this would happen when they didn't resign Ted W.)

I guess Joe Gibbs still got it:4:
laborlitigator
Washington's D looked very impressive. As for the Jets, offense looks good but the D leaves alot to be desired. They should be fun this year.
Maik
Gotta wonda about a front office that does nothing to sign a QB to compliment a superbowl caliber defence (Ravens). Biggest surprise to me yesterday was Cleveland dismantling the Ravens.

m2pc, dont worry about the Jets, they will not be able to stop many offenses. They will finish a distant 2nd in AFC East. If the Pats dont get "trapped" this week in Arizona, they may wrap up the edivision by Turkeyday. Pats defense will be fine.

Mully, looks like Gunther is going to have to suit up and play defense. Too many missed tackles.

After three weeks, observations:

Jags - at 3-0 Good looking D, if they stop being so connservative on offense, they may win a few games by more than a point or two.

KC - Knew they would be weak on D, but lack of scoring is a surprise

Denver - Are the Bronco's ready to contend again?

Colts look like they can beat anyone, except the Pats!

Can the 49ers and Dolphins really be that bad?

Jets and Seattle looking good in early season, can they keep it up?

Looks like the Rams have completely fallen back into the middle of the pack.

Eagles look like the real deal. Owens has made a huge difference.

Right now, I would say that the strength in the NFC is with the Eagles & Seahawks and in the AFC its the Pats & Colts.
m2pc
Eagles did look good didn't they?
Maik

I'd say it is the all-time best team due to one reason alone. Sure there were other great teams (GB, Bears, Dolphins, etc.) but they were great for a few years when there were dynasties due to not having free agency. Today, it is much tougher to be great for more than a year, therefore, Pats are accomplishing the same feat as those other dynasties under much more difficult circumstances.

Read my prior post. This is like comparing accomplishing the same feat but one (for example Bears of mid '80s) free of any restraints and the other (Pats of today) with one hand tied behind your back.

You've got a good point but then one can argue that the talent pool is more diluted now due to the extra teams. If the players from Carolina, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Houston were dispersed among the teams today, you'd probably not fair as well as you did.

Go 19-0 and you'll have no arguments out of me.

Following that same logic, remember that the Pats would also reap some of the benefit of that dispersed talent.

But you can't be the best team of all time if you didn't match their record.

BTW, I don't think (for a single season of course) the 03 Pats would stand a chance against the 86 Bears, 87 Giants or 89 Niners.

They would have been killed by those teams.

I disagree. Those were great defensive (like the Bears) or offensive (49ers) teams. None had the versatility and coaching brilliance of 03 Pats (though the 49ers were close). I think it would be very close competition.

What year did free agency start? Remember the Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years in the 90's. They really don't get much credit for those 4 years. But those teams had some great players and lots of over achievers.

I guess in an odd way you could say it about the Bills. Four straight but never able to reach the summit. It still takes talent, and some luck, to get there.

Amazing how they play up or down to the competition and their propensity to make that big play when its most needed.

This is truly one of the great teams of all time.

Run can't last forever. Another stiff challenge on Sunday when the
5-0 Jets come to town. Pats - Jets is always a great game.
mullysalt
This streak of the Pats has is truly amazing nothing stands in their way. Injuries, weather and quality opponents nothing stops these guys. They always put on a good show and are always prepared to win. If only Brady could pitch for the BoSox, too.
Aggie76
Hey Mullysalt - what is up with our Chiefs??? Was soooo disappointed in the way they lost yesterday. With Tynes missing both the X-pt & FG to the right - heck - they are better off going for it for 2-pts and a TD rather than kicking right now. And its not just him, they had momentum and let it slip right out.

Hated coming into the office today - lots of Packer fans here who just love to rub it in since they won convincingly yesterday.

For everything that went right last year it seems to be going wrong this year. I think this team will invent several other ways to lose games this season. That being said the Chiefs still have 11 games left so root for them I will every week. I remember all to well all those seasons rooting for the Pats, going to all the home games despite loosing week after week. As a fan, I give the Pats my all. I expect the team to to put forth a full effort, win or loose. Read the posts. This guy has gone way over the line but I don't raise a fuss about it I just dress him down in my own special way. So if you want me to call the Broncos the Broncos instead of the Donkies, oh wait you're a Cowboys fan, nevermind then, Donks it is!
Did you know that Findlay, OH, the hometown of Pittsburgh Steelers rookie QB, Ben Rothlisberger, is only about 45 min. away from Toledo, right down I-75? It's also known as Flag City USA!

You see Tex, the Steelers and Lions and who ever plays the Browns are my other favorite teams. Big Ben is something else for being just a rookie, don't ya think?
The Tuna does.:D
