Hi,
I have a 2003 Touring MDX and my Transmission has what I think is a problem, but Acura tells me it is normal. My Sister has a 2003 MDX and hers does not do this.
The problem is when you shift into drive there is a slight click so you press the gas to go and the car does not go until there is a second click. This really annoying because I live at the beach and parallel park every time and when shifting between reverse and drive I always have to wait for the second click before I can move. This is not an intermittant problem, it happens EVERY time.
Could some of you please try the following test for me??
On level ground, start your MDX, release the parking brake, put your MDX in neutral and then put it in D5 and see if you have to wait for a second click in D5 before your MDX starts rolling forward. Keep shifting between neutral and D5 to perform the test several times in a row. You do not need to press on the gas at all to do this test, the car will roll forward on its own when D5 engages. I appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks |

| My 2003/Touring does the same thing. It seams to have started over the last 6-8 months. |

Hello and welcome MWL. The probable reason for the lack of replies is the plethora of info on numerous subjects related to the 'click'. Have you tried to search for info previously posted yet? |

| If you are talking about the transmission clicking into gear it is normal, if you are talking about the lag between selecting drive and the car moving it is normal anything outside of this might not be but like xfactor said do a search alot of information regarding the X's transmission here. |

| I searched and can not find anything relating to my specific problem. I put it in D5 and there is a click followed by a second click a couple seconds later. The car will not move forward until after the second click. My Sister also has a 2003 and hers does not do this, there is only one click and then she can drive. I was hoping more people here would reply with whether there X moves after one click or two. |

| I have never heard a transmission click, just a brake click as I apply the brakes after using them in the opposite direction. |

| The brake click is a loud click. The transmission click is very subtle, you feel it more than hear it. |

Yep- threaten folks with posting over at edmunds... makes me want to go out and start my wifes X to be able to come back inside and respond..
There's a trouble shooting section in the 2001 service manual that cites this as a defect: "Late shift from N position to D5, D4, and D3 positions".
Now the problem is what is 'late". Press your dealer- make the service manager drive with you in other vehicles, document this, get Acura Consumer affairs involved if the dealer is indifferent. |

| Thank you very much for the information. I am glad someone finally offered some helpful information. I am shocked that no one has gone out and tested their X and posted a response here. |

I believe this is the Brake Click which is the pads moving from front to rear. There is a TSB and they will replace the brake shims, see if this solves the problem. I do doubt it is the transmission. |

| I don't hear any "click" (Other than the brakes), but there has ALWAYS been a significant lag time between when I shift it into D5 and when it actually wants to move. Have to be VERY careful not to hit the gas too soon or I'll be chirping the wheels out of the driveway. |

| I have had this same issue with my '02 since practically new, and it bothers the heck out of me. I tend to shift to neutral at red lights, as the tranny "whines" when stationary in drive. If I'm 2nd or third in line at the light, i can shift to drive at the onset of green and still not be moving in time. Sound familiar?? |

Yes, I've noticed this problem.
I don't get bothered by it. I used to have a sport car and when I decided to buy an SUV I knew that I was going to have to compromised with less/slugish performance. When I drive my MDX I'm always in a relaxed mood, so 1 second going from reverse to drive will not kill me.
[off topic]
I also ride a sportbike that I use as a therapy tool to keep me from wanting to speed or be in a hurry whenever I drive my cars. It's a GSXR1000 with 153rwhp that I take on weekend rides around the Central Coast highways of CA. Speeding (+180mph) and wheelies (1/4mi to 1/2mi) are done in empty desolate roads early in the morning.

But getting back to the original subject; I will talk to my dealer and see if there is a recall on the transmision.
I must say though, that I get to drive diferent trucks and SUVs in the military and I notice the same lag in the transmition when going from reverse to drive. I take this as an inherent problem on all vehicles that are, by all standards, a little oversized. Keep in mind that you are moving more than 2 tons of dead weight; and not only moving them but making them change direction and expect an instant response. I'm also thinking that it could be a safety mechanism in the transmission that will allow the gears to get syncronized before torque is applied on them. This same "safety mechanism" may be thrown out of wack with time making this lag seem more obvious as more miles are put on the vehicle. |

The click coupled with a short lag time to shift only happens when my better half fails to engage the parking brake.
Make a point to apply the parking brake after you come to a complete stop and before you shift into park. This method will keep that 4300 pounds on your brakes and NOT on your transmission.
I usually coast into my spot in Neutral. It's a habit that, I believe, has kept all of my vehicles out of the tranny shop. Oh, and yes I change the fluid q spring.
Try this and let us know if it works… |
