Folks,
please don't punish me right away. I read some threads but very suspicious on my mileage. I'm into my first 200 miles and into my second tank. Driving only in city (New York) stop&go with AC all time on. Even if i try be very lite on acceleration -- can't get to 9.2 mpg. Should i go back to dealer or it's can be normal?

It'll improve after the few thousand miles, `course the only in nyc part doesn't help at all. Just to demo, hit the highway. It should easily be +/-15mpg.

There's a stoplight right after I pull out of the gas station. When I reset the meter and then pull out it goes to 7.5 and then starts dropping right before my eyes as I wait at the light. Talk about depressing !

It's meant to do that. The mpg number is an average over time. When you just pull out of the gas station, your mpg number goes into positive territory (of course it's a low number). When you stop at the light immediately after that, the average drops down since your instantaneous mpg is 0 (you're not moving) and you're accumulating these zero-valued samples over time.
For example, the average of 7.5, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 is 7.5 / 10 = 0.75 mpg.
As time goes by, it takes a bigger effort to increase or decrease the avg. mpg number (just the way averages work; you need a sample with a huge delta to make the average move a little).
I just ran into this yesterday with my new 04MDX. Having the instantaneous and avg. mpg right in front of you takes some getting used to. You become obsessed with fuel efficiency ;)
Hope that helped...

just got together with another 04' X. We loaded the same 93 gas, set AC to full auto 70F, reset all and drove one after another for 4 mi with the same speed/acceleration in NYC. By the end of test both got 9.1mpg. So i feel better now. Will test it on a highway soon.
One cool fact: It was around 7:45PM, i was driving second and can confirm his lights went on and just split of a second later my lights went on too. At least good to know that electronic part of MDX is pretty predictable in quality.

Thanks for all posts
