Am I the only one who seems to remember that when Aspartame was first used in carbonated beverages (Fall '83) that it was in a half & half product? I am 99% certain that Coke had a low calorie diet drink using aspartame (half corn syrup and half aspartame). The original diet Coke (1981) was of course made with 100% saccharin.
Because of the concerns about the shelf life of aspartame above 85 degrees the original soft drinks were 50% aspartame and 50% regular. Anyone else remember this?
Thus C2 is NOT new, but a rehash of an early mid 80's FDA requirement. |

| I tried C2 this past weekend. IMO, it was great. And I am one that cannot stand any of the diet drinks. New or not, it is the first 'lower calorie'soft dring that I like. |

Yea I tried it the other night as well; its OK. As far as zero cal drinks go I prefer Pepsi One - but none are as good as the real thing (pardon the pun).
But I started this thread because no one I've asked remembers; nor could I find anything on Google - But I am positive the original aspartame (not the saccharin ones) drinks in '83/'84 were half and half like the current C2. I was hoping someone else remembered  |

| I don't remember aspertame as being part of a half and half solution. I remembered it as the replacement for the standard sweetener with the 0 Calorie marketing. |

... but I seem to recall aspartame being "phased" in due to concerns about its shelf-life stability. My memory is that early on aspartame was only half the sweetner used in the product, until the USDA granted full acceptance in '85ish??

| I think the drink you are refering to is Tab and the sweetners were saccharin and cyclamates. |

'TAB', now that brings back memories....so they still sell the stuff. I remember it being very popular in the late 70's and maybe early 80's.
The diet craze was to drink 'TAB' and eat those little low cal carmel looking squares...I think they were called 'AIDS'....
Can anyone name any other poular drinks and snacks that have since gone away or faded with the times....
Nehi (sp?) grape drink
Yoohoo (still around, but not nearly as popular)
are moon-pies still around |
