My wife and me are leaving Saturday on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean (Royal Caribbean) cruise. Unfortunately a small amount of work still has to go on. Our reservation booklet states that there is unlimited Internet in the suites if you bring your own laptop but that is about all it says. Does anyone have experience with this? All I really need to do is PCanywhere into my work machine via a dedicated IP address so speed isn’t that big an issue. What did they charge for the service (I’ll bill it back to the company)?

I can't speak for Royal Caribbean, but the ships I cruised (Carnival Triumph, and Celebrity) had internet access in the ships library, for a price of course. Just swipe your cruise card, and you're in. |

Our deck has the "Internet" room but without PCanywhere installed on their machines I won't be able to do what I need to. I am going to take an install CD but I doubt they will let me install software on their machines:D
Those rooms will be great for email though...

Unless you are travelling in some foreign countries where Internet Cafes thrive, I think you have a lot more flexibility bringing your laptop when on travel. |

Do you have a wireless card ? My wife bought a pricey wireless package against my advice aboard the Carnival Paradise in February. It seemed to work OK especially in the lobby around the internet cafe, but our room was more mid-ship so we couldn't get it in the room. And she couldn't get the vpn to work. I believe it runs on 802.11 b I've heard rumors they may have full ship access soon.
Regardless of how you access the net, you're of course using a satellite service that's expensive and which I've heard can be slow.
I think it might have been $55 for 100 minutes. |

My wife found a review (www.cruisecritic.com) of our ship and the review stated the suites are wired for the internet and the cost is $100 for the week. If true that less than I thought it would be...hope it works!!
I will take my wireless card just in case...

| As someone who went on Royal Caribbean last year, the service was pretty decent. Some of them allow a flat rate for the entire cruise while others charge on a per minute basis. I believe ours was $2 per minute. Good luck and have fun. |

We're back. Yes there was unlimited Internet in our room. It is a dial-up connection over their satellite system. You actually receive a different phone to use in your suite. The connect speed was 46.6. It worked fine but to be expected was slow. It worked ok for what I needed it for. The cost was $100 for the week.
