Two quick questions:
(1) What's the difference between Running boards vs Side Steps, from the picture, I cannot find the difference ---- I have a 3 year boy and parents frequently visit us (they are in their 70s), so I need something to help my kid and parents to get into the car...
(2) I found the price posted on Acu
da.com is about $634 for running
board or side step... hondaAcura
world is much cheaper, is the int
llation complicated? Who else c
n install it nicely?
Thanks a lot! I love this web si

Thank you so much!!!!
Now, I made up my mind to buy X (rather than VW, or Sienna)... Now, the key question is: what will be the best price in tri-state area.... any idea/recommendations?
Thanks again! |

Side Step looks better to me than Running Board. Are their Width the same? What's better for little kid?
Also, local dealer will charge $620 (incl. installation), is it worth it?
I did find recently, there are several dealers would offer price very close to Invoice for fully loaded X (Touring W. NAV + DVD)... looks like every dealer has some MDX in stock. Any thoughts?
Thanks!! |

jsdmdx,
I too like the side steps. You can buy them from Tim at hondacuraworld.com and install them yourself. It is an easy DIY project. The black side steps are $445.00, and the chrome or satin side steps are $487.50. :4:
Check this out:

| Can't comment about the running boards, but we got the chrome side-steps for our 04. They look nice. We primarily wanted them to help my daughter get in and out. I can't say they're helping too much. They are pretty close to the body of the vehicle, so there isn't a lot of room to place your foot. Also, compared to other SUVs the MDX ground clearance is relatively low - about 8". |

I finally decide to go with running board --- the reason is: there is a little gap between side step and MDX car body, there is some possibilities my son (3 yr boy) may get trapped there.
Thanks for all of you guys' input.. This is one of the greatest sites I have ever seen. Lets work hard and keep this community together.
Best! |

| Im my opinion, the Side Steps are more sporty looking and also more for the wilder younger person or in my case an older person who wants to feel younger. The Running Boards are more conservative and family oriented. More for the mature conservative person. |

| Going off of Tim's idea, why not put side step on one side and running board on other side:2: ? Then you can park your car in such ways depending on the mood. Sophisticated/Stealth=Running Board, park the car other way around when you feel Sporty/Wild=side step. |

I currently have a running board on my X. but i think it is hard to step on it if you are getting out from the back seat (going in as well i also think). It is because of the circular area at the end (rear) of the running board and the door that cannot be fully opened due to the cars parked next you, one coming out from the back seat may have to step on the circular edge (and might slip).
But looking at the photo of the side steps, it looks like it is better for the back passengers. but never tried it though.
I just thought that it would be better if they make running boards with
the sharp edges at the rear like this _____| instead of this _____/ |

I originally liked the way the chrome rails matched the chrome door handles and other accents but ultilmately chose running boards because:
- they offer more surface area to step on which is really handy for getting to the roof rack (the side rails give you two small non-slip step pads and the remainder of the rail is narrow and could be slippery.
- the ABS plastic over aluminum running boards will never rust. The step rails are painted or chrome-plated steel... steel rusts eventually... all it takes is a scratch on the paint or a scrape on the plating (which is highly likely in that location and for its intended purposes)and the horrid oxidation process will spread like a bad case of poison ivy and flake off all the surrounding paint or plating.
Sometimes even the cut-outs in the rail to accommodate the non-slip pads can be the starting point for corrosion if the steel edges exposed during the cut-out are not properly painted or plated afterwards.
I had bought $550 premium running boards (black painted heavy gauge steel, rubber bumper strip all around, non-skid discs imbeded throughout) from Overlander.com for my '94 Grand Cherokee and they actually rusted through in one spot by year 7. For an accessory subject to corrosion & abuse (stones, mud, sand, salt-spray, shoes): steel bad, aluminum good.
- I've also read some posts where the screws used to secure the non-slip pads on the rails started to rust, leaving the inevitable nasty orange streaks.
On the other hand, like cp_ssrebba mentioned, the running boards do have these contoured end caps at the front and rear that slope up towards the body where you can't step. Not an issue at the front but at the rear it can bit of a nuisance when I need to reach stuff towards the rear of the roof. A completely flat board at the rear would be more practical. |

Just got the VIN# today. Kind of exciting, guess my kids will love it... Any web-site I can check how long it will take to delivery?
Also, I heard several complaints from friends regarding the Acura genaral quality is slipping these days, any thoughts?
On a seperate note, what will be the first service date?
THANKS AGAIN!!! |

Your dealer knows how long it takes from the time that the VIN is available until it hits his doorstep. If he's swapping with another dealer, the time will be lengthened a bit. Just ask him!
I've owned 8 Honda /Acura vehicles since my 1981 Accord, and do not feel that the quality has slipped at all (and I'm sure that some here will disagree with me). In fact, I feel that the price/performance/quality ratio is better now than ever before before, considering what the vehicles offer. While some relatively minor problems like the gas slosh and brake clicks are well known, and the tranny problems are a major source of annoyance to a very small percentage of owners, the major difference is that this forum now gives us a place to document these issues publicly. Human nature being what it is, the large # or positives comments get buried under the negative ones.
I believe that the vast majority of Honda - Acura vehicles have few problems, and that those problems are solved once brought to the attention of the dealer. Many of us have had problems getting adequate solutions from our local dealers, but many more have had no issues at all with them.
Good luck with your new X. I received mine a few months ago, and have put on 3000 miles with no problems. The gas sloshes, brakes click a bit, and the tires drone (Not the exhaust hanger!), but who cares ???? This is a great vehicle, made by a great company!
Just remember to program Roadside Assist's number into your cell phone... just in case !
