I currently have a 2002 base MDX. I just received a letter from the dealer saying that they had quite a few 2004's in stock, and were willing to take $3K off MRSP. Two questions. One: is the $3K off a good deal? Two: What are the significant differences (besides styling which is subjective) that I will notice, if any?
Thanks. |

| i got the same letter ..i did alot of thinking dual mufflers, projector headlights (non HId) different tailights, slight bumper change, and more horsies...no doubt the 2004 is a good SUV but not to tempting to trade a 2002....i really need a drastic change to trade it in....when peeps on the road see an mdx...they dont notice the difference...only the mdx enthusiast notice the change....my advice....keep the 2002..wait for the redesign....but thats my opinion |

How many miles do you have on your 2002? Have you got the extended warranty? If you're approaching 50K and don't have the ext. war., it might be a good move. I bet you can bargain off even more, heck they're offering $3K off just to get you down there. One difference you'll certainly notice is that its quieter. You'll also have all around air bags too.
...just my 2ยข. |

I've got an 01 touring w/o nav. Got a 7 yr/100k extended warranty with about 50k currently on odometer. I have been toying w/ the idea of an 04, touring w/nav, as I really wish I had gotten the nav.
However, we are too close to the 05 model year to make a move.
There are several things about the X that annoy me, but I still think it's the best value for the $$$. I'm holding out hope that for 05 they will have corrected some of those minor annoyances.
I suspect that 05 will be the last year before a major style change, so my indecision may perpetuate even further! |

Does this imply that dealers are having trouble moving '04 MDX inventory, or is this just a standard end-of-model-year tactic? |

$3,000 off is a pretty good deal but it all depends on how much they are willing to give you for your trade. Remember their playing with two numbers here: purchase price of the 2004 and trade-in value of the 2002 (in your case).
Dealer's logic is that they want to move the 2004 before 2005 comes out, ONLY make a profit of $1,700 ($3,000 off is $600 over invoice + $1,100 from 3% hold back) and get a decent 2001, 02, or 03 MDX which they can make more profit off of. This absolutely make business sense.
So what you need to find out, if you're serious, is how much is the trade in value for your vehicle. You should be able to do this over the phone or E-mail in order to avoid wasting your time.
As a reference, I did get my 2004 MDX at $500 over invoice with protection package thrown in. No trade-in. But only one dealer out of dozen dealers in Southern California would sell at this price. Next best dealer was $1,000 over invoice without protection package. No one wanted to beat or match this price.
Keep us posted on how things go. |

| I got my X in March for $2K under MSRP in Florida, so I would think that $3K this late in the model year is no great deal. |

Don't let dealer fool you with 3k below. Even you paid at Full MSRP for 05 model, when you sell the car using kbb. 04 vs 05 is like 3k difference in term of trade in or private sell (try 02 vs 03). Even it is only 3 months a part for 04/05, Plus you are getting more toys and features in 05 than 04, maybe HID or something. I made the same mistake when 02/03 model changes. I think it is better to wait a little bit for 05 than getting left over 04 and will lose 3k on trade in the future.
