How do you get the DVD player out? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I am trying to tap into the video of the OEM DVD player (below the stereo), but I can not get at the harness behind the player, and I can not for the life of me figure out how to get the dvd drive out.

The frame around the face comes out around the top, but the bottom lip is completely stuck, and I am afraid of breaking it. It's so easy to break trim pieces on the MDX.

Anyway, does anyone know how to either:
- get the dvd player (the drive) out
- know the path of the wiring between the drive and the RES so that I can tap someplace more convenient.

Thanks,
-Dana

Hi,

Since you took your dvd player out,I have a question about the dvd player which you might be able to help me with.

Is the factory dvd player in the MDX RES a standard model like those used in PCs? With an IDE connector and a voltage connector.

My 2004 RES dvd player does not play DVD+R movies I have burnt and I would like to replace it with a DVD player which can play both DVD-R and DVD+R in additional to commercial DVD-ROM discs.

I'm hoping the factory dvd player has not been customized for Acura.

Thanks!

No... It is a completely custom unit. Notice the lights on the front that indicate whether it's playing a cd or dvd, which a convensional drive does not have. Also, it's very shock resistant. It's a very heavy unit, and has two custom connectors on the back. One is a 26 pin connector, and the other is smaller, though I can't remeber how many pins.

Getting the DVD drive out requires removing the drink holder (which just pulls out) then the chrome trim around the shifter, then the fake wood plastic panel over that area. Once that is out, then you can pull out the coin tray, and then pop off the trim around the dvd player. Then, there are 4 screws that hold the dvd drive in place. After that, it just lifts out and you can disconnect the two connectors.

Dana,

Thanks for the dvd player info. I noticed the dvd/cd lights on the front and thought maybe that was a feature of the particular player.

I'm sorry to hear Acura uses a custom unit with custom connectors. So much for my plan to replace the dvd player.

I guess I'm stuck unless someone can tell me how to reprogram the firmware so I can play DVD+Rs. Or maybe I can get an old or new version of the dvd player which plays both DVD+R and DVD-R.

Thanks again. Time for plan B.
