res video to nav screen problem/question... - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have modified my 03 MDX so that the backup camera's analog to digital converter back by the subwoofer can switch to the video from the res dvd player in the dash.

When I switch over, I have some quick color morphing, and then the dvd image shows up, BUT, it's black and white instead of color.

I suspect it's just weak video signal due to the coax that I used not being as "high grade" as I had hoped.

I am wondering if a small signal amplifier would help the situation, and where I could find one.

Anyone have any advice here? Or other fixes to this problem?

I have to say that it has been a huge pita to accomplish this... I don't necessarily recommend that others try this mod. In fact, I am not even done with mine yet... At present, I still need to have the car in reverse, and trip the relay in the back with a 9V battery... I plan to finish up the switching and backup camera override this week before my vacation, which is why I need it done.

Truthfully, it's not that bad that the image is not in color... I only plan to switch to the video so that I can see the dvd menu to get movie's started for the kids without having to pull over and stick my head back there to see the dvd menu.

Anyway... Some help here would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Dana

I did this mod several months ago, but I'm not sure why you're only getting B/W.

I used an RCA cable and grounded the shield on both ends, mounted the relay in the back, used a toggle switch and two diodes (maybe not necessary) to switch the input at the Nav unit.

If that is not confusing enough for you, please refer to my professional diagram in order to be thoroughly bewildered.

I actually used dpdt relays, so I am switching both the + & - of the video, as opposed to merging the grounds.

At the dvd player end, I am hooking up to the video + (blue) and video - (red), but NOT the video ground (brown/black), on the 26 pin harness at the dvd player. Is this what you did also?

Hi,

Very cool. I have a question about the dvd player which you might be able to help me with.

Is the factory dvd player in the MDX RES a standard model like those used in PCs? With an IDE connector and a voltage connector.

My 2004 RES dvd player does not play DVD+R movies I have burnt and I would like to replace it with a DVD player which can play both DVD-R and DVD+R in additional to commercial DVD-ROM discs.

I'm hoping the factory dvd player has not been customized for Acura.

Thanks!
