| I was behind an 04 today in my Sti and I notices that because of the dual exhaust that the pipes hang down like 3 inch. I was actually shocked, they are pretty low to the ground, I was thinking that this would be a serious clearance problem if they tried to do anything off road. |

| I don't think they hang down that low. Perhaps he was just carrying something heavy in the rear. |

| Not sure what you're talking about. My '04 has better than 13" of clearance from the bottom of the tailpipe to the ground. I don't see this as an issue. I was wondering if maybe someone removed the mufflers from the rubber mounts as I had to do to install my hitch. But that couldn't be it either because than the mufflers and all the pipes would be swinging in the wind. Is yours more than 13" of clearance. |

Anyone taking thier MDX out offroading is not of sound mind. This is just not an off roading vehicle. |

I concurr - I was behind an '04 on the freeway the other day and I thought the same thing. We're not talking about the exhaust tips, but the point where the pipes join together near the rear diff. The pipes definitely hang lower than the rear diff, so they would hit ground before the diff. IMO Acura did a sloppy job in throwing together the dual exhausts - I like the '01-03 setup with the dual tips much better - you don't see low hanging pipes from behind . . . |

Hmmm, IMHO, the new dual exhausts and finishers look way better in the 2004, than pre 04 MDXs, and in fact this is one of the reasons I recently bought it. That and the brushed chrome look, new tailights and headlights. I liken this to when they changed the front lights for the 2002 TL and added fog lights, this just sold me. Everyone to their own. |

| I found myself behind another 04 MDX today and it had the same pipes a good 3 inches below the diff. Wow... I love the dual exhaust but thats not good at all. |

| I noticed the same thing too. I personally don’t like sacrificing clearance just for the look. |

| I'm thinking of changing out my 04 exhaust tips to 2 - 3" chrome square tips on each side. Has anybody done this? |

| Upon further inspection, having peered under an '03 in the parking lot at work, I have come to the conclusion that this perceived lack of clearance on the '04 is an optical illusion created by the support beam that goes between the two pipes of the dual exhaust and the second pipe just under the differential. The '03 single pipe runs under the differential the same way the '04 does. It just doesn't have the support piece between the 2 pipes. The support piece is smack dab in the middle of the pipes so it is not affecting clearance at all. I think our eyes are just playing tricks on us! |

I wonder what is better - the exhaust pipes hitting something and giving you an early warning or the differential getting smashed by a rock because there were no pipes to stop it.
I say it's a security feature :) |

Both the '03 and '04 are officially rated as having an 8" ground clearance. So while the dual exhaust may appear to be lower, it is still not the lowest component of the MDX.
I agree it's a tradeoff on looks, I personnally like the look of the dual exhaust on the back, but would like it much better if they could hide the pipes under the car better. |
