One Bad Tire - Click HERE for Original Thread

Is it true that if you have one bad tire (due to a side puncture) that all four tires need to be replaced? I live in Washington and my Les Schwaub dealer told my husband that because one tire was bad and the other 3 had 30,000 miles on them, he had to replace all four tires at once. We have a 2003 MDX. They told us this as they were pulling the core from the one bad tire (the car was up on the racks) and wouldn't let us have the vehicle back!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

There's no law that requires it. I've done that reluctantly in the past. It would probably not be a bad idea to do all of them, but it's by no means a requirement. Wouldn't let you have your X back???? Call the cops!

Usually you just have to make sure that the tires on the same "axle" have the same amount of wear. Therefore if a front tire is badly worn you just have to replace the two front tires. It's a question of keeping the diameter of the tires the same so that it doesn't affect the ABS etc. It is possible that changing only one tire only could also affect the VTM system on the vehicle. Perhaps someone else here can advise if changing only two tires will affect the VTM.
Changing out all four sounds a bit drastic unless they are all badly worn.
Unfortunately with tires you can go to 4 different dealers and get 4 different opinions.

Unless your tires were badly worn (less than 25% tread left), there was no need to change all four tires. (The only reason that could justify changing all four is if the dealer was installing a significantly different tire design than your OEM tire... )

The most common approach would have been to (as Scoobs recommended) simply replace the other tire on the same axle. Note: 5/32" tread depth differential results in less than 1.5% diameter effect, so impact is very negligible for the average driver/driving conditions.

For the dealer to try and hold your vehicle "hostage" is unbelievable. I would report this tactic to your local Better Business Bureau and find a new dealer.

Les Schwab is a very reputable dealer. My 04(3months old) had a slow leak in the rear right tire. Instead of driving back to the Acura Dealer, I went to my local Les Schwab and they patched the leak for free, no questions asked. I asked if I owed anything and they said no. Their employees are hard workers. At 30,000 miles arent tires at least 50% worn. On my other car, I would replace tires at 30,000 miles.

So I guess what we're saying here is:

One bad tire don't spoil the whole bunch, girl....

Sorry.

Usually you can't use a plug on any repair not within the tread portion. I think not even an inch in from the outer edge. You might try a inner tube for a patch for a hole on the sidewall. Honesty the best is to replace the entire tire. They say you can have a high speed blow-out on holes or puncures on the sidewall. I had a nair on the outer edge of my tread area and have put a plug 2 times and still have a very slow leak where I loose 4 psi in a month. I am trying to wait to replace that 1 tire when I get a set of all 4 new. I actually had another incident with a sidewall hole and had to repalce the 1 tire at a cost of $125 for 1 tire.

Buy them in pairs. I'd be wary of returning to that dealer though. Try to use someone you've dealt with in the past.

Huh? I've done that for 30 years! I've found that properly-designed-and-installed plugs do a much better job than patches.

I meant not with the tread area. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks for your feedback.

I've gone to Les Schwab for many years and this was the first time we have ever felt "taken" by them. When I went back to complain about their treatment the manager offered to refund me the price of one tire plus the installation. So, since I would have had to buy 2 anyway, now I was just paying for the 3 and have 4 new tires on my car. Still not happy with the way we were treated the first day--sad to say I don't trust them anymore and will take my business elsewhere.

With or without problem, a car dealership is the last place I would pick up tires unless they were making an offer I could not refuse.
