Yesterday I traded in the X and downsized to a Volvo XC 70. What prompted this decision was the transmission recall coupled with my tranny slipping a bit, the increasing brake click and weirdly my drivers seat that had some play 2 years ago when I got the X loosened up a bit and I could feel slight movement, and getting close to spending for new tires and service. Finally, my bike rack dented the tail gate and having turned 37000 miles the warrany would have been gone this year. I did take a hit on the trade in as I had 2 years to go on the lease but the XC is due for a remake next year and there was a deep discount on the remaining 04s. This site is the best, and my wife and I have great memories of our Saturday on the No Cal X outing to Sonoma. I will be lurking around. Careful with the politics, we are all in this together.

Don't be stranger, bomo. Good friends and good times don't come around that often. Hope you and the mrs. can join any future 'get - togethers'...having a Volvo around to pick on would be fun. Seriously, stay in touch!

So many people go back and forth between Acura and Volvo, could these two brand have that much in common?

Not exactly in terms of maintenance and repair cost. Up keeping the Volvo can cost you a lot in comparison to the MDX which is an "upgraded" Honda.
Japanese cars cost lot less than the Sweaden brand Volvo on repair and maintenance cost.
I have a Volvo for almost 10 years now and get used to the high maintenance cost. E.g. an oil change for a Volvo costs me around $65. But it only costs me $32 for the MDX oil change.
Volvo parts are even more expensive than those of MDX. In the long run, it adds up a lot of money to keep a Volvo.
As far as performance and handling, my experience on Volvo is better than the MDX.

The higher maintenance cost of the Volvo is softened somewhat in the first three years because they now have free scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36k. That actually makes them cheaper to own than the Acura the first several years, especially if Acura nails you for the "severe conditions" maintenance schedule.
Of course, some of this is factored into the vehicle's price, but heavy discounts on Volvos are pretty common.
Thus Volvos, like many European vehicles, can be good lease vehicles, or ones you keep for just 3-4 years before trading them in (though Volvo's declined resale values hurt here). Darker side to European vehicle leasing is that the lease is nice if you end up with the unit that is chronically in the shop (still a higher statistically probability with the Euros than Toyota/Honda). |

I appreciate all the good byes here and thanks to all of the No CA folks who were so friendly and welcoming at our one and only meet. You really set the tone that makes this such a great site. I will not name you all here but you belong in the X.org hall of fame and your users names would be recognized by all 10,000 members here.
I will do a comparision when I get a few miles on the XC 70 but it is apples and oranges comparing the SUV to a wagon. That said some quick thoughts: The X is much roomier, fit and finish on the Volvo is superior keeping in mind I had a 2002 X. When you close the doors there is a nice solid thunk and the interior smells like leather. The transmission allows for clutchless shifting (geartronic they call it) and is smooth and responsive even though the engine is a straight 5 at 208 hp. It does have a turbo. Mine is equiped with auto bi-xenons, the moon roof is one touch and the luggage rack runs north south so it is much quiter with it open, even on the highway. The volvo has a mini spare with no room in the well for a full size one which I do not like at all. It has a rear fog light and full curtain air bags. The volvo Nav is in the dash and is operated either on the steering wheel or by a remote control that can be used by the passengers, even from the back seat. I haven't had a chance to test it because the disc is mailed from Volvo, something about getting the latest product. There is no touch screen so I suspect there will be a lot of scrolling involved and no voice activation. The sticker was $43k but it was discounted almost 7500 dollars plus I qualified for a $500. AARP rebate. I did lease for 3 years and all maintence is covered for 4yr or 48,000. They even installed a hitch and bike rack for 1/2 price. They really want to move these units and they were selling a boat load. |

Good luck with the XC. My wife and I did just the opposite in '01 going from the XC to the MDX as she wanted to sit higher up in the vehicle as her main reason for changing. Plus kids were getting long legged and the rear facing third seat was making it tight for them when we loaded it with friends. We're going to buy the MDX next month when it comes off the lease - too many miles and it will make a great learner vehicle for son to drive to school in a year. Then we will evaluate redesign on the MDX and what else is available.

I didn't know the XC had a rear-facing 3rd row. I thought Volvo was more safety-conscious than that.

Mine was a '98 and was an option we added so maybe they have dropped it now.

rear facing third seat still available as part of a $1000. versatility package. The max passenger weight is 80 pounds. Kids only.

Yep, 14 and 12 year olds passed that weight just before we got rid of the XC. It was a good car for us but the MDX is more luxury for sure. And better dealer service than we got from Volvo at 3 different dealers - all were luke warm.
