My son recently moved to San Diego, CA and I'll be visiting in a couple weeks for a long weekend. Can anybody recommend a reasonably priced hotel ($75 to $150 per night). He lives in the Pacific Beach area.
Thanks in advance. |

R Stevens-
If your son is in PB area...you may want to check in hotels near HOTEL CIRCLE in Mission Valley area off of interstate 8. The Hanalei hotel, Best Western, Mariott Suites in Mission Valley area are all great hotels. They are near Mission Valley mall with great restaurants and Fashion Valley for great shopping and also about ten minutes freeway driving from Mission Beach and Pacific beach..
So your son is living in Pacific bEACH EH??? PARTY TOWN USA...I hope he is not a college student...oH MY:eek: |

Agreed.
Also, be sure to use www.biddingfortravel.com in combination with Priceline. This is an incredible resource and one of the most important websites on the internet if you travel frequently and are willing to invest the time to learn how to use it. Be sure to bid through their Priceline Link at www.amazing-bargains.com to help support the website.
Example: I've stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt (a four star hotel) in San Diego for $70/night through Priceline. It's downtown (a few blocks from the Gaslamp District and adjacent to Seaport Village), and we had a 24th floor view of the Coronado Bridge.
Another example: I stayed at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Hotel (a spa resort) in Phoenix for $55/night last month. This is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed at (top 5), and I travel for business frequently.
Enjoy & good luck! |

I like to stay at Pacific Terrace Inn, which is on the beach on the edge of PB before heading into LaJolla. You might get a good weekday rate, but the place is pricey. They do offer a government rate, though. ;) I think the Capri is next door and also on the beach. They might have good deals as well. There are also some Mom and Pop joints right around there if you aren't looking for anything too fancy. Have you son help you identify these places and check on rates. They are all near PTI and not far from Garnett. You could also check Mission Bay just near Mission Beach, but those places may cost as well. The thing that is good about Hotel Circle is that there are lots of rooms from the major chains that are reasonably priced, but you have to make a trip on the fwy (the 8) to get there and back. Not too long of a trip to PB, though. There are also some hotels along the 5 as you exit in the PB area (around Claremont, Garnett, etc.) You might be able to find a Days Inn pretty cheaply. It all depends on what you want. I highly recommend PTI if you can swing it, though. Good luck. |

Less pricey than PTI and others, is Marriot's Residence Inn. Great places with studio apt. type rooms, very comfortable with many of the comforts of home, and a great free breakfast buffet.
But not that 'cheap' and hard to get res. in summer because families like them for travel stayovers. But worth a shot if you can get a discount on Priceline, et al.
Not too far is the Hampton Inn on Kearny Mesa, sometimes has reduced weekend rates for the non-business visitor.
Great thing about SD is you are never too far from anywhere and a freeway is always close at hand.
An oldie is the Hanalei in Mission Valley. Clean and presentable if not elegant. With a tiki bar that looks like it came out of the 50's. It did. But since it's been renovated by the Red Lion hotels, not sure it still has it's charm or reasonable prices anymore. To think I used to bus tables at lobster feeds on the other side of the freeway when I was in high school.
Some of the best luck I have had with hotel/motel res. is to just do searches on a specific one by name/location. I have got $70-80 rooms for $50 by doing that. Some more obscure travel sites will have them cheaper than many of the better known ones, but beware of the $25 cancellation fees, etc. But not any worse than the $45 charge Expedia might hit you with.
Have a great time in paradise! |
