Can anyone out there give me some advise on canoes? I am thinking of buying my first one. I have no experience. I want to use it for lake paddling and also to take out on an ocean bay near my summer cottage which is on the shore. Is it safe to canoe on an ocean bay? There is no surf to speak of. I would prefer a shorter canoe (15') and I would like 3 seats to take the kids. Anyone who has any advice chime in!!

Canoes are much more popular to paddle on rivers & lakes becuase of the difficulty there is launching them even into a mild surf.

In general the wider, flatter canoes are more stable than the narrower "white water" style boats, but they still can't compare to something designed for the surf.

You are going to have a hard time finding a canoe that has more than fore & aft seats -- that middle seat is an invitation to put some kid that is too young in the boat, have them flop overboard, and result in a lawsuit...

Most of the higher end shops will have both traditional shaped hulls & assymetrical hulls -- the newer hulls are designed for a more 'athletic' style of canoe paddling so you can have a longer more pwerful stroke. The materials are also much improved, with carbon fiber making the boats truly lightweight -- at under 50 pound it is all about being able to portage 'em.

If your kids are big enought to paddle you should think about getting two canoes -- if they are nio yet big enough I would have reservations about taking them on the water for safety reasons -- it is not like you can "child proof" a canoe with safety netting on the deck railing ;)

Thanks for the feedback. My kids are 10 and 13 so they are old enough to paddle. My neighbor siad I could take it in salt water but I think you are right about that. I am looking at a 15 foot Pelican canoe that has 3 seats. Here it is http://www.sportsensation.com/boati...noe_3492239.htm
I thought it might be a good starter. The other idea I had was the Sea Eagle inflatable 395ps PaddleSki. I though that might work in light salt water and fresh but my neighbor said they are slow to paddle. Any opinions on that?
