Front bar on MDX - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey everyone,

My uncle just bought a black '04 MDX yesterday so I'm helping him find some accessories. He wants to add running boards so my grandmother can get in. I saw some good threads here already about that, very nice.

My thing is this: he wants to add some kind of metal bar/bumper-grill protector to the front of the MDX to give a sporty/masculine look. Being that I know jack about SUV's, what is that part called and any suggestions on where to pick one up? My brother and I will likely be doing the installations (if simple) for these pieces.

Eggroll,
Welcome. It sounds like your uncle is very wise!!

Do a search under bull bar and you will find quite a bit of info on this. Good luck!

hondacuraworld.com has a Chrome Grille Guard...is that what you're looking for? Good Luck!!!

Some places call them "brush guards" also.

Thanks for the info everyone. The search was very helpful. Hondacuraworld.com has exactly what he's looking for and the prices seem fairly decent as well. Can't beat free shipping.

My mom is picking up her new RSX Thursday so I'm definitely showing her the site as well since I know she's gonna want the trunk mat and cargo net.

I have the bull bar and rear bumper bar along with the rear light grills. I got in locally in NY, but I believe it is the same ones that Tim carries...Tal & Hadaas brand...not sure about the spelling.

I never got the impression that it would protect your car, other than from the small bumps and bruises that you may get from parking on the street. It's really for that and aesthetics.

In fact the bull bar saved me a couple of times in this regard. Cars either hit my bar, or they really try to avoid hitting the X entirely because they see the bar and think "that bar looks like it can damage my car"...

I see a lot of X's nowadays but mine usually sticks out from the crowd ...the others look so tame compared to mine.

I have running boards also and yes, they are good for older people.

I'm not a fan of the Manik type grill guards...the 1 piece thing that covers the grille and the headlights. I think that takes away from the slick frontend of the X. The X has such an awesome frontend...why hide it with a bra???

Anyways...I think it's a great idea to get these add-ons.

Good luck.

Does anybody know how a bull bar affects safety? It looks like it attaches directly to the body of the vehicle and may interfere with airbag sensors, crumple zones etc...

Mine is made by a company called Tal and Haddas.
I think they do test their products so that they comply with international safety standards.

There were quite a few threads discussing about the bull bar, it's effectiveness at impact and effect it would have in the MDX safety features.

My understanding is that it doesn't interfere...
Also, the bull bar feels hollow inside.

I look at is as a cosmetic improvement plus protection again parallel parkers...but that's about it...

Hey Eggroll,
How difficult was it to install Tim's grills and where did you get the instructions? Please reply with link or attachment.

Thanks :-)

Most of us with bras on our X's use them for protection during bug season. Of course, I've lived places where bug season essentially did not exist. That is not true in many parts of the country and something to consider if you relocate, or plan any long distance travel.
Bugs can be more than a nuisance, they also block up radiator and A/C condensors assemblies, as well as do a mean job on even Zaino protected finishes, esp. on the plastic front end.
I don't use the bra whenever it's practical to remove it, which is more than 7 months of the year.

I haven't purchased the bars yet since my uncle hasn't mentioned it again. My brother installed the running boards a few weeks ago for him and it was super simple he said. Looks really good as well. You can find installation instructions on Tim's website.

They're in *.pdf format, so you'll need Acrobat Reader to view and print.

Nicksan: Any pics of your "X" with the front bull bar and rear bumper bar? Did you install yourself? What was the cost? Much appreciated.
