TV Repair Advice - Click HERE for Original Thread

My 2 year old 32" RCA tube television has been out of commish for a couple of weeks now. I called Thomson Electronics; they're not willing to do anything even though it's just a couple of months out of the 2 year tube warranty. I guess if I would have reported the issue during the warranty period I would have been fine. No, I didn't buy the store warranty. I think I paid just under $400 for it....pretty good deal at the time.

Symptoms include an occassional flickering/bending of the right side of the screen over the course of a few months. There was blank screen on the right side of the bending. Then when it died, the picture and sound went out and it makes a high pitch whining noise when it's plugged in.

I've called a few places. One thinks it's either the tube or the yoke. Says there's no point in spending $400 on that and don't buy another RCA/GE; thinks I got lucky with my 13 year old GE 13" that still works great. Another thinks it's a power supply issue...they'll look at it for a $50 fee that can be applied to the repair. I actually know somebody who had a power supply issue with a Sony 27" but he couldn't remember any of those symptoms.

I would just throw it out, but given the technology and digital changes around the corner, I'd like to hold onto it a little longer. Plus, Mrs. Nightguy loves the built-in guide feature on it. And it has a pretty sharp picture...the best of any 32" at Best Buy at the time.

So, I'm pretty confident there's an expert here somewhere. Any advice would be appreciated....before I get tempted to look at it myself and get electrocuted.

How'd you pay for it? If Visa/MC Gold or better, you might have a 1yr automatic extended warranty through them.

Have a 32" Toshiba that lost picture after a move some 3 years ago, although nothing could be pinned down to the trip itself.
Cost $130 for a new video driver card. I wrote the mfr. (also 2 months past warranty) upon the urging of the repair guy who told me Toshiba is big on customer service.
I had a check for $130 in the mail 2 weeks later.
Glad I didn't try to repair it myself, which at the time would have been a major hassle and inconvenience.
It is still running great, and rivals my newer Wega for color accuracy and even came with a longer warranty.

Let me ask one question? It has not been dropped correct. I am no expert but my father works on computer monitors all the time with similar problems. The noise usually comes from a leaking capacitor. That is usually near the high voltage flyback transformer. Thats why there is no picture. But I could be wrong. Just an idea

The high-pitched noise could certainly be related to the flyback transformer and associated circuitry, including a cap. It could also be a defective load resistor in the same circuit. But this would not explain the sound going out.
I think your problem is more related to something common to video and audio circuits.
Barring multiple problems the fault is likely in the power supply. The ringing of the horizontal output you hear is often a symptom when a drive signal is absent.

Can you give the guy an idea of what it should cost to repair it based on shop time and parts? Welcome to the board BTW!

I have a 5 yr-old 32" Sharp tube TV and I'm seeing a reddish cloud at the top left and a greenish cloud on the right side. It is especially apparent during bright scenes. Widescreen DVD's pretty much mask the problem but it's there nonetheless. Can you give me an idea of what this might be and if its worth trying to repair?

Thanks.

Yeah this seems to be the consistent advice I'm getting, at least as far as the tube. How much to repair you think ?

It's still sitting in my entryway waiting to be taken somewhere. Just haven't had time to do it.

Ding ! Ding ! You win the prize, which is uh, well being right. Dale B gets a silver. They also said they have to reset the coil...whatever that means. All the places I talked to estimated about $150 and this was $154.04 Not that it's not worth it, but why is it so definitely $150 ? Lease payment for stripmall, new MDX, what ?

Can't wait for it to come back.

I would assume 150 is the deposit for them to even look at it. Then if you decide to repair it with them they apply that to the repair bill.

$45 is the deposit for my size screen. In their minds it's really $150, they just get the $45 up front. That's me taking it in. Thank god we have the X now. I don't even want to explain how we got it home.

Just to clarify, I'm not complaining, just amazed. The more I think about it, it's the one thing I own that I don't know much about and can't explore much without risk of electrocution, so there's not much I can do.

With one place I called I did mention the horizontal output transistor so they at least thought I might know a little something about TV repair but they pretty much blew me off saying that there would be somthing else wrong with it.

Almost forgot....Thanks to everybody who responded.
