another tranny woe--in overdrive - Click HERE for Original Thread

Just lately my '01 MDX--one of the very first--has developed an odd vibration sound seemingly from the tranny/drive train.
It only happens when the RPM is low, down around 1500, at moderate speeds typically 45-50 MPH. There's a sudden, transient vibration-- a very 'bad vibe' feels like--sometimes with a barely dedectable drop in RPM.
It can be cured and never happens when I shift down to D4--so I guess it must be some problem with the 'overdrive' of the tranny. I've had the recall inspection of the 2nd gear--OK-- and had it back to Radley in DC (Really Nice Guys!!) but nothing lights up diagnostically and the manager said they couldn't reproduce it (huh!) and don't have any recommendations.

Well, I have one--I'm no mechanic but it seems to me the tranny's about to go. I take this car way up into the Appalachias and have no desire to get marooned miles from nowhere!! Radley gave me a very nice trade-in offer but the 01 is still a great car. . . So what do I do now??

My 2001 is acting the exact same way. I had it to the dealer and he said that the "shudder" is an "electronic glitch" in the shift signal in the tranny that happens around 40-45 mph and "doesn't hurt the tranny - it's an inherent problem with that year, but it should not be a cause for concern"....hmmmm. I shift into D4 when I am not on the highway and am thinking about a trade-in on a 2005, before it cost me big $$.

Sorry to hear it's happened to another owener but it's nice to know I'm not alone. I had the EGR valve replaced in hope that it was somehow contributing to the phenomenon--it seems to have improved the situation slightly but it still 'rumbles' occasionally.

Well, now I have an '01 with a rumble but a 100K transmission warranty--that I could trade in for a later model, which would have a 50K transmission warranty-- so I don't know what I'm gonna do!!

I have an 02 with had exactly the same symptoms, after a couple of unsuccessful attempts at my primary dealer (who could never replicate the problem!) I took it to another dealer across the province and sure enough the mechanic pronounced that the torque convertor was bad. The transamission was replaced under warranty as I still have balance of power tarin warranty left. The replacement tranny is much improved over the original, however after driving for almost 15 days I am beginning to experience a resonance/hum at around 70 MPH..... I am now seriously considering selling my MDX before the warranty expires as Acura have chosen to selectively extend warranty coverage.

My 2002 MDX started displaying similar symptoms since around 35K miles (it is now at 60K).

From 35mph to 50 mph, the transmission jumps from 5th to 4th and back again. This results in a constant shutter, hesitation, and a tactile bumping when driving on smooth, flat roads. You can watch the rpm's on the tach jumping from 1500 to 1200 and back in quick blips. As a result the ride is very jittery and annoying in this speed range, not what one would expect from a vehicle in this class.

The problem has become progressively worse to the point that I now routinely down-shift into 4th when driving below 50mph. Not to good for the mileage...

I have discussed this with my service department and they too felt is was an electronic glitch, however, I plan to address this with them again when I take the X in for its' 60K service.

Overall, my Acura experience has been outstanding, however, as this problem continues to get worse it will certainly impact my future buying decision.
