Anyone interested in a group buy for the Muth Signal Mirror?
We can justify this buy for safety reasons!!!
There was a group buy awhile back for $199 + shipping. Retail at their website is $269 + shipping.
I hope we have enough people to get a group buy started.
Warzau
Have you asked? I'd be willing to join in, for heated, signal mirrors since out MDX have heated mirrors.
tl_mdx
... voting for a group buy.
Warzau
FYI I sent a email asking and am awaiting a response. If you are interested chime in so we can get a round figure of those willing to participate.

Just a reminder:

When I asked about this they said that most of the mirrors they make are OEM for GM and they spec chrome glass. They said chrome is more expensive but they would end up having to charge too much for dichroic glass because of the low volume so it is not an option.

I thought that might cause glare in night driving but I was not able to tell a difference. The mirror is easy to pop off so I tried both under identical circumstances.

My install took a few hours because of the documentation but it shoudln't take more than an hour if the wiring is the same on all years since I have identified the location for the turn signals.

This is what I did:

Mirror Housing Removal

1. Open the driver side door and lower the window
2. Remove the door panel as follows:
a) Remove the tweeter pod by pulling it away from the door starting at the top section.
b) Remove speaker grill using a small screwdriver to pull up the side under the armrest using the small screwdriver indention. Once you pull up the back slide the grill backwards to release the front.
c) Remove 3 brass speaker screws to remove speaker and disconnect wiring.
d) Remove 3 black screws holding door panel.
e) Open screw cover in door handle using small screwdriver to lift the rear of the cover and then remove screw.
f) Push casing forward until the rear edge can be pulled away from door (you may want to use lever as though you are opening door) and use a small screwdriver to release handle rod. Now pull backwards to release the front of the casing so that it is free from door and disconnect wiring.
g) Open screw cover in armrest using small screwdriver to front rounded edge of the cover and remove screw.
h) Remove door control panel by lifting it from the rear and then sliding backwards to release front, disconnect all of the wiring.
i) Release door panel starting at the bottom by pulling firmly starting in the corners.
j) Reach behind and disconnect light harness
k) Lift panel to clear window trim and remove.
3. Remove the mirror as follows:
a) Disconnect tweeter from wiring harness
b) Pull back top right corner of vapor barrier, disconnect mirror wiring harness, and slide off of T-shaper keeper.
c) Remove 1 brass and 3 black 10mm bolts (one is behind weather stripping) do not remove small torx screw.
d) Use small screwdriver to gently push in sides of retaining device around torx screw and remove mirror.

Mirror Replacement

1. Using sturdy gloves press down on the outboard side of mirror to pivot fully outward.
2. Reach behind the inboard edge of the mirror and pull back on mirror until it unsnaps from the mirror control arms.
3. Remove heater terminals from wiring and remove mirror.
4. Remove foam insulation from the mirror housing.
5. Remove 9mm nut holding wiring clamp.
6. Feed Signal Mirror? harness behind mirror control and down wiring conduit.
7. Replace 9mm nut holding wiring clamp and include Signal Mirror? wire in clamp.
8. Feed Signal Mirror? wire through foam insulation and replace foam.
9. Connect Signal Mirror? mating connector to the Signal Mirror? wiring harness and reconnect connect heater terminals to heater wiring.
10. Carefully tuck wiring around and behind tilt mechanism as you replace mirror. Line up the tilt mechanism with the tabs on the back of the mirror and use the palm of your hand to firmly press down on the Signal Mirror? until it snaps into position.
To engage the Signal Mirror? it may be necessary to pivot the mirror fully outward just as was done during removal. Slowly, and carefully apply slightly more pressure on one side of the mirror until it clicks. For proper installation, listen to the ?clicking? sound of each snap (4 snaps altogether) as it snaps into position. Failure to hear the ?clicking? sound of the snap(s), could result in mirror falling off due to improper engagement of the snaps.
11. Test by pressing down on all sides of the Signal Mirror? to ensure proper operation and engagement of the snaps.

Wiring

1. Replace the mirror housing on the door and reconnect the factory wiring harness
2. Pull back a portion of the vapor barrier and dislodge both ends of the rubber boot between the door and the door frame. Feed the Signal Mirror? wire down the door and out the hole vacated by the rubber boot.
3. Guide a piece of gopher wire or clothes hanger wire through the rubber boot. Secure the Signal Mirror? wire to one end and pull it back through the boot.
4. Guide a piece of gopher wire or clothes hanger wire through the hole in the vehicle frame to the inside of the car just above the wire-connecting block. Secure the Signal Mirror? wire to one end and pull it back into the vehicle.
5. Tap into the turn signal wire.

I also posted a couple threads with photos about this process a while back:

Thank you for your inquiry!

I think a group buy would be possible. Can you give me an indication of how many members may participate? Also, would you want to include any of our Signal MirrorĀ® upgrades?

Please advise me at your convenience.

Sincerely,

FYI this is the mirror upgrades, personally I don't or wouldn't have a need for them.

What is the signal mirror upgrade?
tl_mdx
The upgrade is a control module that adds additional signaling types to the basic turn/flash signal. Please see the web-site at

http://www.kwmuth.com/products/smupgrades.htm

On a related topic, the quotes from the local professional installer listed by Muth in San Jose, CA are:

Labor: $85 per mirror.
Parts: Heated - $150.00 per mirror; Non-heated $98.00 per mirror.
Warzau
Memebers have done photo step by step diy. I will do it myself, seems easy enough.
Warzau
Update, we need at least 10 people for them to match the last GB. SO we need 6 more people

Perhaps those who have already installed these mirrors can tell us how great they are to help convince others...
XStatic
I have noticed that drivers behind me seem to slow down much quicker when I use them to signal a turn off of a 2 lane road and I have more luck changing lanes or merging into a tight squeeze.

If you don't use your turn signals except when you are stopped at a light, don't bother getting them as they don't add much value there.

Next time you are driving down the interstate, notice where you are looking at the cars around you.
Chances are you are not looking at the rear end of the cars that are ahead of you in an adjacent lane. You are probably looking at the driver, either directly or through their rearview mirror.

Since these turn signals appear at just that location, they will be noticed! Of course, they may just stand out as different and catch other driver's attention.

In either case they do seem to help, and I like the clear silver view better than the blue tint anyway.

HARDROCK
This is just why I want them - I've found it much easier to see other drivers who have such mirrors when they signal to change lanes.

Can we get a few more believers to testify:18:
Warzau
:D I rather have more join in the GB. BTW I was supposed to respond back today as to how many more joined in. Come on guys lets get these supper neato cool mirrors.

Does the right mirror still fold down when i reverse?
andreseng
Yes, it does. You are only changing out the glass not the internal mechanism.
Warzau
as andreseng said we just swap out the glass portion.

Here is the original group buy and picture showing how members here swapped them out. http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&highlight=muth Plus on muth website they have a PDF on install on a MDX.

This is what XStatic said in the Original GB Thread

Right now this has only been installed on my 03 MDX. The parts information that they have indicate that the same mirror is used in 03, 04 and 05. The 01 and 02 appear to be the same however they were from a different supplier and thus have different information. Given that the 1999-2005 Odyssey uses the same mirror it just makes sense that this kit will work on any MDX.
TranMDX
I guess no one else is interested. Bummer.....

Warzau, did you get an answer from the seller about the group buy for 5 people?

Okay guys the GB is on, here are the details

We will extend group buy price of $199.00 (normally $269.00!) to members who enter the code MDX1004 in the "Comments" section when the order is placed through our website www.muthco.com. Since our website will not calculate this special automatically, we will send a confirmation email confirming the $199.00 price when we process the order. Shipping options are available on the website and will have no discount. Any additional special available on our website is not applicable to this group buy. (During October, we will be running a 10% off special for purchases on our website. AcuraMDX.org members can take advantage of this special offer on any additional kits beyond the MDX kit itself. See:Signal MirrorĀ® Upgrades ) The group buy will run from 10-01-2004 through 10-31-2004. All other terms are the same as our normal online purchases.

Chris Wedge is our contact re this GB if you have any questions please ask him cwedge@muthco.com.

If the information is helpful towards the GB and if you are so inclined post the question you asked and the response so the questions are not repetitive.

Just placed mine.....:jump3:

Does anyone has the problem to order it from www.muthco.com? I always get JustAddCommerce Security Warning either try from home or from work. I sent an e-mail to Chris.
Warzau
Hmm thats interesting, I had a problem like that as well. I think ( i say think cause I don't know if it had any effect) diabling ad-blockers and pop-up blockers as well as any proxy might help.

Any pics yet? The GB expires this weekend.
Warzau
Nope sorry, haven't had time. It was a hell of a move, had a major problem the night before the move. By some miracle we overcame it. I am just plain tired from the move. Had to put up blinds in our new home. 29 of them. Then fixed up my daugther's room, so she wouldnt be so homesick, hearing " Daddy I want to go home" breaks your heart. Plus having to water the sod everyday so it wouldnt die. Then just this week we went FINALLY took the MDX to do the recall on the transmission. Now to boot my Civic's speedometer is crapping out on me. I would fix it myself but to diagnosis it and then fix it is just too much right now. Maybe in a couple of weeks but I promise to take pictures!

Hey, all... I didn't have my X until just recently. Would anybody else be interested in another group buy?

Contact the same guy I did and mention it to him and then start a new thread it would be easier to view for the newer members but you can link to this discussion and the one I linked to.
