On a long distance trip, there is humming noise coming from the windshield pillar. The noise frequency does not vary with speed , it is like a pure tone humming resonance. It only happens whenever it is hot outside (>90F) and with strong consistent wind such as traveling faster than 110, or against the consistent head wind).
I took it to the dealer and they said they can not test >110. So they drove around and came back with "no problem found" dah?
I have owned multiple minivans and sedans ; they never have this issue. Does anyone else have this problem? |

She does not list her location. Perhaps she is referring to Km/h which converted to MPH would only be 68. Not doom territory. And if my X did it at 68 mph I'd be pissed if the service folks said they wouldn't drive 68 to replicate the condition. |

Yes...it is 110mph or sometimes at 80mph with strong head wind.
No ...I don't do it all the time.
No...I am not the only one who has achieved such speed on SUV.
On several occasions, I was passed by Ford Expedition, Infinity FX45, Corvette, Honda accord while doing 115mph.
I am not looking for comments on speed....but solution to humming noise. |

The solution is to SLOW down. People who drive that fast need to be locked up. I do not care whether you are looking for comments on speeding or not, 100+ mph is reckless, dangerous, and just plain stupid!!! I have an obligation to protect me and my family from drivers like you! |

It's rather hard not to comment on speed when discussing your question.
You must go at these speeds on a regular basis if the symptoms you describe really bother you. Most of us don't go over 80 ( I AM ASSUMING) frequently enough to recognize this 'problem' headwinds or not.
So it would be difficult for you to gather much data, unless you are suggesting we drive that fast to see if we can duplicate your findings.
It is even more difficult relating it to outside temperature, except possibly the window caulking will be softer, and maybe something in the windshield vibrates more easily.
It is not surprising you were passed by an assortment of vehicles while grossly exceeding the speed limit. There are a lot of fools on the road.
The next vehicle to pass you is likely to be a trooper's cruiser, wondering if you can also hear his siren as well see his flashing lights. He will be doing you a bigger favor than you will hopefully ever realize.
Assuming you have stock tires on your MDX, you are easily reaching their rated speed if that gives you some comfort. There is nothing between you and the road except a couple of inches of rubber.
If that does not give you pause, then continue your experiment with my blessing and good wishes. |

I have only noticed that humming sound but only when I am breaking the sound barrier!
WTF!! Where do you live that you (and others) drive that fast on a regular basis? You are driving a 4000 lb truck/van not a freakin sports car!
BTW....The rubber/plastic trim around the windshield can and will make that kind of sound flapping in the wind |
|
|
| eurohazard |
At 110MPH, tire/road noise coupled with wind noise around the mirrors should cancel any "humming." I have had my X up to that speed and then some, but I wouldn't say I "travel" at that speed. I never noticed the humming noise you talk about.
A good guess that Echo2625 mentioned, is the windshield trim itself may be creating the hum. I would clean the trim, and make sure it's free from bugs and debris. |

Who cares ? It's not worth getting undies in a bunch over some retard that could be making this up for all we know. Get out the yellow pages and find a body shop that does racecars.
I have a bigger problem with the '92 Cutlass Cierra with a nasty corner to corner shake that passed me today doing about 90 mph in a 65 . Meanwhile a late year Corvette C5 that sticks to the road like glue is in the right lane doing 60. I don't get it. |

| IIRC, way back when, one of our early members, a female, solved a windshield noise problem with window-screen rubber spine material. I wonder of this might be related? |
|
|
| MDX-Woman |
Update....
After the second visit, one of the lead technician at the dealer checked the car up to 125mph. He confirmed the noise and could reproduced it at 70mph whenever there is crosswind.
The windshield was remounted and special foam was injected to the pillar (TSB xxxx , I was told) but the noise is still there.
They have kept the car for 3 days now...
frostyra, what is the window-screen rubber spine?
I want to share it with the technician..Thanks. |

Yea, that's the followup of DMor's screen spline fix, one of the greatest contributions to 01 owners who wanted to reduce windnoise.
I don't think that'll do the trick; in fact, the screen spline tends to resonate itself around 80 if it's not tucked in well.
You might do a search for KAZOO. That was a different problem w/resonance from the A pillar(s) and I don't know whether it was ever definitively solved. My recollection is that the thinking was air travelling under the hood then up the A pillar just aft of the wheel well (there was space there). That was for some 01's and 02's IIRC.
In the meantime, I'll be avoiding Montana. The X shouldn't be driven > 90 IMO. It feels nice and solid in a straight line, but IME gets a bit squirrely at that speed for my comfort (and I had years of professional & high-speed driving courses). You better hope you don't need to stop or turn quickly, else you might be doing so on your roof, in a ditch, or in somebody else's front-end. |

In the words of Adam Carola, "I'm going bogus on this one". Unless you mean a wind test (not sure what the point would be anyway), a tech taking your vehicle for a ride at 125 mph ? I'd like to know the premium on their liability insurance.
This would not be legal even under Montana's old "reasonable and prudent" law. The weight and braking ability of the MDX would never convince the MT Highway Patrol otherwise. I don't think they'd even consider it unless you are driving something built in Germany, Italy or Bowling Green, KY.
Edit: The more I think about it the more sure I am you're making this up. Even the 80 mph with strong headwind scenario makes no sense. I remember the last 30 mph wind day we had here, it was adventurous at 70 mph. Nope, just not buying it. |

I found out my '04 is tight to 25' when I remember to press the recirculate button but I have no VSA when there's a strong undertow. And there's an issue with the TPMS starting at 15'. My dealer only took it to 10' and found no problems. Well, duh ! |

I am sure this is obvious to most of you, but can anyone say "troll"?
Sometimes I wonder if people sit at their computer and think up stupid questions to start a thread and watch the replies...
The only silver lining I can see in this thread is that natural selection will take care of people like that, hopefully on a desert road somewhere away from the rest of us. |

While some of these people are starved for attention or otherwise have a warped sense of direction in life, and become a nuisance, I hardly think they deserve a tragic ending! :( |

Dale - You're a much better person than me.
Personally I wouldn't lose a minute of sleep if people like that departed this earth permanantly, tragic ending or otherwise.
I enjoy racing and very high speeds, but I do it on the 1/4 mile dragstrip and closed road racing courses. Street racing and the type of driving mentioned by the original poster are generally the domain of younger drivers who haven't matured enough to know better. |

I think we were all suspicious but I feel some guilt for calling this out because I'm sure more than 99% of the threads are people who are legitimately looking for some advice. It's probably best to assume that everybody has a real concern and then have some fun trying to help them figure out their issue. These "trolls" are as much a reality as spammers. Like I said before, it's not worth getting excited over an essentially anonymous person making unproven, outrageous claims. Just make another mark in the moron column and move on. |

Well, a variety of folks departing the earth for a variety of reasons, is happening on a daily basis and I am sure most of us are not losing any sleep over it unless we have a personal connection with them. |

I am only looking for solution and sharing the problem solution with the forum. The speed is a variable on this problem. People drive at their comfortable speed for given condition.
Zafer, Thank you for understanding that I am not promoting driving high speed on crowded highway. Also, Thanks for the useful input...I will pass it on to the tech. The dealer still have my car and are waiting for the regional acura rep to come to test drive the car....suppose to be here next week.
Yes, the speedometer did indicate 125 ; perhaps its actual speed is 119 or 90 , I don't know. On open safe road with miles of visibility, the X speedometer showed 60 about 8s, 100 about 25s, 125 comes in less than 55s. The whole process was less than a mile from stop. |

Problem solved !
The dealer replaced and remounted the windshield glass with a brand new one and the humming noise problem went away.
Prior to this, they resealed around the windshield, replaced sunroof, replaced the plastic molding that run from front to back on top of the car, inject yellow foam thing into the A-pillar. None works. |

Great! The dealer fixed my problem of 'leaking around left front window when more than 20 feet underwater' too. They sealed all the windows with silicone caulk (50 year, of course). |
