Can anyone help with a really weird problem? I have a 2001 MDX with 42000 miles. Two days ago it developed a very faint high pitch whistle inside the cabin. This noise is present ALL THE TIME, regardless of ignition switch position, engine on or off, radio/CD on or off, nav system on or off, car in motion or not, etc. etc. I can't pin down the source, but it seems to be louder in the front than in the back of the car.
I'm wondering if it's related to the garage door opener transmitter?
I searched the forum but no-one seems to have posted on this. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Weird! You might be able to pinpoint it by using a length of flexible rubber or plastic tubing -- put one end to your ear, and move the other end around the cabin until you can hear the loudest whistle (sort of a poor man's stethoscope).
Out of curiosity, is the sound still there after the car sits still for several hours, such as overnight? If not, it could be a very slow vacuum leak. |

Yup - it's there in the morning, in the evening, all day long! Nice thought on the vacuum notion, but it really sounds like an electronic noise. I'll follow up on the good stethoscope idea and let you know. Thx!

| You might also try disconnecting the battery. This will require resetting the radio and/or nav but it might give you a clue as to what is generating the noise. |

I have had to have my ac/heat blower motor cleaned out twice. It didn't make a whistle but it made a loud noise when on high due to leaves getting in there. Your fan may have something in it. Did you try shutting the blower off?
SORRY - DIDN'T NOTICE THAT YOU SAID IT HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. VERY STRANGE!!
Did you search the car thoroughly to see if there is something in it? Glove compartment, storage compartment, under seats? |

YOU GUYS ARE BRILLIANT!!
First, I will claim that I had previously done a search inside the cabin for foreign objects.....
So, I found a length of physical therapy rubber tube that I could fit right inside my ear. Amazingly it blocked out all noise except that right at the other end, 3 ft away. I got in the car, stuck it up at the garage door opener, around the nav screen, in the CD player,.... and then into the little cubby under the sound system controls. Lo and behold, the whistle sounds in my ear. No, it's not the pencils, lollipops, chewing gum, etc. that fill the thing up (all of which is not mine!), but a 2 inch long purple cylinder attached to a key chain buried under all of that. Which I have never seen before.
I take it in the house, and my wife says "Oh, that's a mosquito repelling device I took when I went out one evening"!!! And she twists the cylinder and turns it off.
With great restraint, I avoid telling her how fulfilling it is to spend hours clambering around the cabin of her car trying to solve a problem she created! Not to mention, wasting the time of this Board!
But, forstyra: what a GREAT tip to find the source of the noise. THANKS! and, apple 904, you were right on the money.
PROBLEM SOLVED, THANKS TO ALL!

| That's hilarious! Glad I could be of help -- I'd love to have seen the look on your face when your wife told you what it was!:21: |

| That's really funny. My wife is the daily driver of my X. I often tell her I could live for a week just off of what I could find in her car. So I understand what a daunting task it would be to search her car. |
