Surges in steering wheel... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Does anyone know where the adjustment is for the serpentine type belt that tightens the tension, so the power steering won't jump / surge? (Is there a "known problem" w/ this?) I looked & my '03 is different than the '02 I had. The '02 had a long adjustment screw w/ a locking nut on it. Can't find one on the '03. I don't want to take the X to the dealer b/c it takes to long. ( I see it's the large wheel / pulley on top / center of the engine)
It would be under warranty I know, but it should be a simple adjustment (I think?). No, I don't want to buy the book (Service manual) b/c it's a leaseed vehicle. I can do basic mechanics just fine.
Anyone?? Thanks for the help!

Do you get a vibration in the steering wheel when braking at highway speeds(70mph+)?

When are the Donks going to lose again?
Lrpba300
mullysalt, No vibration at any speed. Just a slight "pull / surge" when accelarating or turnning a corner at low speed (intermittent!)...
Never loose! Hey, you should be cheering for us this weekend chocker fan! We play the hated Faiders! So, unless you LOVE the faiders, you'll cheer for us....oh wait, that puts you even FURTHER behind in the division, doesn't it! Oh the pain and agony it must be for you! :9:

Are you talking about torque steer? I think that's normal during hard accelaration. If that's not it, then I have no idea what you're talking about.

I don't know what the adjustment is but it seems like you'd get some squeal if it was loose. Good thought to start there tho. Does the wheel rock back and forth on its own when you're in a turn - like on a cloverleaf ? That would make me think ps pump.
Lrpba300
kimsta..no,not torque steer. maybe under hard accel. but under normal accel., it "wobbles the steering wheel" sometimes. it does it when you start into a turn..

nightguy..I checked the fluid level, it's fine. It feels just like some older cars did when you have a SLIGHTLY loose belt for the power steering pump. No squeal, just slight, sometimes

Never min. I looked at it w/ the cover off. You have to adjust the belt at the Alt. mounting. I'll prob. have to have the dealer do it! I got some pics w the cover off. Will post later for those courious.

Here's how I saw it.....

I have a similar problem. The dealer could not see it, but I guess I am more sensitive to it. My steering just suddendly changed, but in a small way, and I now have that wobble you describe.

What was the fix?

Did you do it yourself?
Lrpba300
chriscragg, I found that most of it was the fact that I got better gripping tires, (GY Fortera's HL), so with some wear, they started to "grip" the road better & had a different feedback to the steering wheel. I also got them rotated recently & the proper air pressure in them, & that helped my "surges" a lot. I'll still have the dealer check it next time I take it in for other service. Good luck

Sorry this post is coming years later but maybe it will help someone in the future.

I too have noticed the surge in the steering that you discribed. It feels exactly like a slipping power steering belt. This condition would cause an intermittent steering boost!! A bad seal (o-ring) in the rack sometimes losing pressure would also cause an intermittent boost and the same sensation!!! :12: See where I'm going?!

My condition was most obvious on a right wheel turn when sitting still (i.e. Navigating into a tight parking spot). The steering wheel would turn easily and sometimes NOT (almost kick back) just like a wet slipping v-belt on an older car! :4:

End of story . . .

Dealer confirmed, replaced the rack - PROBLEM SOLVED!!! :2:

I had the exact same problem and new tires solved it 100% Here is a link. http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=27062

I am having the same problem. Low speed pulsing as though the wheels are trying to straighten themselves. I can replicate the pulsing when sitting still and turning the wheel to the left. It doesn't;'t matter whether it's on asphalt, grass, or plain old dirt. The steering wheel starts pulsing back to the center continuously until i release pressure then it stops and no the power steering pump is not straining. If turning left the steering wheel bumps/pulses in the opposite direction. I think it's a bad rack.

Thoughts????

Probably a warranty deal but what was the cost. I think i have the same problem.

thanks

It has been more than a year since I chimed in but I am thinking a bad rack too. Mine initially seemed better with new tires but it still pulls and pulses at very low speeds such as parking.

I do not have any leaks and it is no worse so I am not going to do anything about it. I also wonder is something simple like bushings could be at fault.

I had a mechanic suggest I change the power steering fluid - I hesitated for 2 months until the weather broke. I changed the fluid and 95 percent of the pulsing is gone. He stated that power steering fluid breaks down just like engine oil and loses its viscosity allowing the steering to pulse. I wouldn't of believed it if I didn't do it myself.

How did you drain the fluid? Disconnect a PS hose at the rack or elsewhere? I am going give this a shot, nothing to lose.

Thanks Fanelle, I did a drain/fill of the PS fluid and it has solved the problem. If you remember, new front tires initially helped but wound up being wishful thinking. It has been about 2 weeks and all is well.

I did a second drain/fill about a week later to give the new fluid time to mix in. The fluid was nearly as dark as the original. I bought 2 containers of PSF at the local Honda for $1.78 each just for this purpose. I used a large syringe and a clear polyethelyne tube.

This is the same dilutional method Acura describes to drain the ATF except they recommend 3 drains and two fills for the ATF which removes 87.5% of the old fluid.

Good news!! I'm still good as well. I want to do mine one more time; maybe twice. I'm glad i could help.
